Who We Are Looking For

Atkore is currently seeking an Environmental Specialist to join our growing Harvey, IL manufacturing team and take on challenging and progressive work on managing environmental, health and safety programs that aim to protect the workplace, the community and the environment. Reporting to the Environmental, Health & Safety Manager, this person will utilize their academic background and experience to review, evaluate, implement and maintain federal, state and local environmental regulatory requirements as they apply to our manufacturing operations. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in civil, chemical, environmental, or geological engineering or other engineering major with academic coursework directly related to the job responsibilities described above with 0-1 years of experience in an environmental, health and safety role. Experience in lean manufacturing or business system-based company is a plus.

What You'll Do

Additional Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Maintain environmental records, perform inspections and prepare regulatory reports to maintain compliance with Air, Waste and Water Permits..
  • Develop and conduct EHS training for all new and existing associates at the Harvey Facility.
  • Provide EHS support for all areas of the Harvey Campus. This includes environmental inspections, EHS program audit, incident investigation and training.
  • Routine essential functions include risk assessments, JSA development, new hire orientation, program development and day to day administrative needs.
  • Work closely with leadership to ensure all process activities meet regulatory requirements.
What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited 4-year university, or commensurate experience, in an engineering-related field.
  • Zero (0) to one (1) years of experience and a willingness to work in a heavy manufacturing environment.
  • Exposure to Lean principles or Six Sigma is highly desired.
  • Must have strong analytical skills to determine root cause analysis and resolve operational failures and set corrective action/course
  • Must be a driver of EHS requirements and capable of coordinating the design, build, and implementation of quality and safety solutions.
  • Must enjoy working as both an individual contributor and as a facilitator for work teams.
  • Must be action oriented and demonstrate energy for things seen as challenging.
  • Must possess leadership, presentation, and training skills, organization and planning abilities.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have a strong drive for results, able to quickly learn quality requirements/procedures.
  • Must follow through with program implementation at all levels at the plant.
Within 3 Months, You'll
  • Complete your Atkore immersion program.
  • Understand how your job will help deliver Atkore's strategy.
  • Gain an understanding of your departmental function within the organization.
  • Gain an understanding of the training materials and procedures your team owns.
Within 6 Months, You'll
  • Update training materials and procedures.
  • Partner with the Manufacturing and Distribution Teams to understand facility processes. Investigate and provide corrective measures for on-the-job incidents and injuries.
  • Understand facility wide environmental permits.
  • Identify ways to strengthen the team's commitment to Atkore's core values of Accountability, Teamwork, Integrity, Respect and Excellence.
Within 12 Months, You'll
  • Creating and updating reports, training materials and documentation necessary for EHS compliance.
  • Be managing all site level environmental permits necessary to maintain regulatory compliance
  • Be able to resolve issues quickly and safely.
