Seeking a molecular / synthetic biologist with experience in engineering a variety of microorganisms to join a fast-paced and dynamic biotech start-up. As a core member of the organization, you will be instrumental in executing all aspects of the microbial / phage engineering technology platform. In this role, you will work closely with microbiologists, immunologists, and bioinformaticians to drive the development of a unique technology that seeks to optimize the generation and delivery of novel therapeutic modalities. Your expertise will drive the isolation, characterization, and development of key bacterial and bacteriophage assets that will translate into novel therapeutic therapies.

Job Description:
  • Leading the core R&D team in conjunction with the CTO
  • Standard molecular / synthetic biology generation of constructs using Gibson or cloning
  • Engineering bacteria and/or phages for the recombinant expression of enzymes, peptides, and antibodies
  • Application of molecular/ synthetic biology tools for the recombinant modification of bacteria
  • Protein purification methods
  • Enzyme assays
  • High throughput screening methodologies
  • Familiarity with/in the following is a plus
  • Propagation and manipulation of bacteriophage
  • Start-up biotech environment
  • Management of junior scientists

Responsibilities:
  • Establish/develop genetic tools for both aerobic and anaerobic host strains, including transformation, PCR, cloning, and CRISPR-Cas applications
  • Design and implement strategies for efficient expression and secretion of therapeutic modalities
  • Coordinate with outside collaborators and vendors
  • Maintain up-to-date notebook
  • Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication
  • Present data to internal and external audiences and stakeholders
  • Mentor junior scientists

Education & Experience
  • Ph.D. or equivalent in molecular/cellular biology, microbiology, or a related field
  • 2+ post-PhD years of relevant laboratory experience, in academic, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology settings.
  • Previous industry experience with an understanding of the drug discovery process from hit identification through late pre-clinical discovery is a plus
  • Salary commensurate with experience
