The Environmental Compliance Specialist is responsible for managing, directing, and overseeing the environmental conditions of all the quarries and to make sure the Company is in compliance with the environmental regulations including permits, permit renewals and town ordinances. It is essential for the Environmental Compliance Specialist to communicate in a positive manner with all inspectors, vendors and all Braen team members, while always following the Company's core values of Service, Integrity and Respect.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Manage the day-to-day testing and compliance at five (5) quarry locations
  • Conduct inspections with NJDEP; NYDEC and local health departments
  • Negotiates contracts with third-party vendors for outsourced testing
  • Directs quarry/asphalt managers on remediation of compliance issues
  • No direct reports, currently


Responsibilities/Requirements for this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Overlook all sites for Environmental Compliance
  • Conduct frequent drive through inspections of all sites
  • Coordinate with site managers if a problem is found
  • Coordinate with the sweepers when and where they are needed
  • Responsible for monitoring inventory for dust control nozzles and pumps
  • Accompany DEP enforcement, County Health Depts and Township inspectors when onsite
  • Frequently monitor Air and Water permits and make sure we follow compliance with all permits
  • Create and maintain logbooks and spreadsheets for permit requirements
  • Conduct inspection of site logbooks for permit requirements
  • Monitor calibrated water meters for all sites with water allocation permits
  • Conduct monthly and quarterly water samples on all sites
  • Calibrate PH and temperature equipment quarterly
  • Submit water sample results electronically once a month
  • Submit water pumping results quarterly to the state
  • Attend all monthly meetings as a NJAA Environmental Committee Member
  • Coordinate and oversee all Phase I inspections of newly acquired sites
  • Submit "Community Right to Know" for sites required


Required Knowledge/Skills/Aptitudes:
  • Minimum of 5-10 years' of relative experience
  • Solid regulatory knowledge
  • Open-Pit Mining/Quarry industry experience, strongly preferred but not required
  • Possess strong management/leadership skills
  • Must be Company & Safety oriented
  • Possess strong organization, record-keeping, and communications skills
  • Computer skills are required


Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of driving between locations/properties
  • Ability to move freely within the quarries, in a manufacturing environment


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
  • This is a full-time position
  • Days and hours of work are generally Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 5:00pm - Saturday work may also be required - Schedule is subject to change due to production and night work
  • Daily travel between Braen locations and others will be required
  • Must have a clean driving record (we will run a driving abstract upon hire and annually thereafter)
