CARNEY SANDOE & ASSOCIATES has been retained by The Governor's Academy, located in Byfield, Massachusetts, to conduct a national search for their next Director of Alfond Coastal Research.

The Director of the Alfond Coastal Research Center at The Governor's Academy is a full time, twelve-month science faculty position who plays a key role in providing students the opportunity for authentic learning experiences grounded in our unique ecological environment.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, the Director is responsible for supporting faculty in developing and implementing innovative programs; conducting outreach and strengthening ties with outside organizations and professionals; and creating opportunities for outside professionals to work with faculty and students on campus throughout the year including summers.

This position will work closely with the Facilities Department to assist with monitoring of wet lab, workshop, and dock infrastructure. A successful candidate will be actively engaged in other aspects of community life at The Governor's Academy.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Teach two sections of science (one lab-based).
  • Participate in one season of the afternoon program.
  • Support the faculty in teacher-initiated research initiatives, field investigations, river boat excursions and project-based work. This support may be in aiding existing projects or in assisting teachers in developing new field- and research-based curriculum.
  • Conduct outreach to strengthen ties with outside organizations and educational institutions in order to enhance student learning experiences.
  • Create opportunities for outside scientists, educators, and other professionals to visit/stay at the facility to share research initiatives in collaboration with teaching faculty.
  • Oversee and monitor the operation of the wet lab, workshop, watercraft and research equipment. In doing so, the individual will develop knowledge of aquatic research systems to support teacher initiatives and student research.
  • Present on-going teaching and research initiatives with the greater community throughout the year, including educational and scientific conferences in the summer.
  • Liaise with the Communications Department to share on-going teaching and research initiatives with the greater Govs community, including alums.
  • Liaise with Facilities staff to properly maintain building infrastructure, living systems, dock space, and vessels and to ensure all OSHA requirements are adhered to.


Qualifications and Skills Required for Position:
  • Qualified candidates should hold a bachelor's degree (master's degree preferred) with minimum five years of teaching experience in life sciences or closely related fields with proven experience of innovative teaching and best-practices in the classroom.
  • A successful candidate will have experience in scientific research in either the educational or professional realm. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in ecological and environmental field research.
  • Must show a demonstrated interest in social justice, equity, diversity and inclusion work and have experience creating equitable, inclusive, and anti-racist spaces in their teaching. Participate in professional development related to equity, justice, diversity and inclusion.
  • A background in independent school education, secondary or higher education is preferred.
  • Candidates should possess strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • A focus on teamwork, collaborative leadership, strategic thinking and the ability to effectively manage time and multiple tasks are essential.
  • Successful completion of a criminal records background check and disclosure of vaccination status.
