The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) in Syracuse, NY is building a faculty cluster in Water Research to complement existing expertise in this general area as well as in water chemistry, water resources management, and aquatic ecology. The new cluster will be seeded with tenure-track positions in water quality modeling (Department of Environmental Resources Engineering), aquatic biochemistry (Department of Chemistry), water policy and governance (Department of Environmental Studies) and biotechnology and aquatic sciences (Department of Environmental Biology). Here we invite applications for an academic-year (10 month) tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Aquatic Molecular and Cellular Biology. We are especially interested in candidates with a research focus in aquatics to contribute to supporting freshwater and marine systems in the Northeast and globally through substantial participation in ESF's inaugural Water cluster hire. We seek a teacher-scholar with a strong commitment to engaging students in the classroom and through research mentorship at the undergraduate, MS and PhD levels. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in this interdisciplinary water cluster as well as build an internationally recognized and extramurally funded research program that relies heavily on molecular approaches. A strong interest in collaborative research with faculty in Environmental Biology and other departments within the College, is expected within the broader mission of the College to advance knowledge and promote stewardship of both natural and designed environments.

Responsibilities: The workload for this position is 45% teaching, 45% research, and 10% service. Specific teaching responsibilities include: 1) an undergraduate course in Cell Biology, 2) an upper division undergraduate/graduate level laboratory course in Molecular Biology Techniques 3) a one credit graduate level seminar in the candidate's area of expertise, and 4) contribute to a one credit senior synthesis course. Service responsibilities include advising undergraduate students, mentoring graduate students at the Masters and Doctoral levels and participating in department, college and community service.

Required Qualifications:
  • PhD in molecular or cellular biology, biochemistry, biology or related fields
  • Strong record of publication of aquatics-related research
  • Evidence of potential to secure external funding to support research


Preferred Qualifications:
  • One or more years of postdoctoral experience and a proven track record in either molecular, biochemical, or cellular biology research
  • Evidence of effective teaching and mentoring
  • Evidence of strong lab research experience with some field research experience
  • Evidence of collegiality and dedication to professional service
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate science effectively to multiple constituencies
  • Demonstrated experience fostering an inclusive environment, working with people from diverse backgrounds, and incorporating diverse perspectives in research


The College and the Faculty: The successful candidate will join the Department of Environmental Biology (www.esf.edu/efb/). The department has over 30 faculty, 110 graduate students, and 510 undergraduates. Our Biotechnology major has an enrollment of 70 to 80 students and draws on faculty in other departments, e.g., Chemistry. Other EB undergraduate majors include Aquatic and Fisheries Science, Conservation Biology, Environmental Biology, Forest Health and Wildlife Science. ESF's more than 25,000 acres of forest properties include the Adirondack Ecological Center (https://www.esf.edu/aec/) which serves as a basecamp for teaching and research in a near-pristine 15,000 acre portion of the Adirondacks. Our department is home to the Center for Applied Microbiology (https://www.esf.edu/efb/appmicro/), the American Chestnut Research and Restoration Center (https://www.esf.edu/chestnut/), the Center for Integrated Teaching and Research (CIRTAS), the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment (www.esf.edu/nativepeoples/) and the Restoration Science Center (https://www.esf.edu/research/restorationscience/). It is also home to the Thousand Islands Biological Station (https://www.esf.edu/tibs/) on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River, Cranberry Lake Biological Station located in the Adirondacks and surrounded by wild forest and wilderness lands.

ESF is a specialized PhD-granting college within the 64-campus SUNY system, and is a Carnegie R2 "High Research Activity" Institution that consistently earns high rankings in US News and World Report, Forbes, Princeton Review, and other national college guidebooks. With a total enrollment of about 1,700 undergraduates and 400 graduate students, ESF provides an intimate small-college atmosphere while its immediate proximity to Syracuse University and Upstate Medical University fosters a vibrant, diverse, large-university setting.

ESF has an especially strong focus in aquatic sciences with more than 50 faculty on campus focused on environmental problems involving water. In the past decade alone, ESF has made major investments in new laboratories e.g. Center for Integrated Teaching and Research in Aquatic Sciences, the forest soils laboratory, and the mass spectroscopy complex in A&TS. These facilities bring outstanding capabilities to ESF allowing for the recruitment of new high quality faculty. Existing faculty in Chemical Engineering and ERE are working on new technologies for remediation of water quality problems such as harmful algal blooms and PFAS contamination. The Clarkson-ESF Center of Excellence in Healthy Waters will interface those efforts with private enterprise. This position is expected to collaborate and expand upon those efforts.

Cellular and molecular research facilities on-campus at SUNY-ESF include: (1) The Edwin C. Jahn Laboratory for Chemical Research, a well-equipped polymer, environmental, natural products and biochemical research facility; (2) Analytical and Technical Services, with 600 and 800 MHz NMR, high resolution GC-MS, LC-MS, MALDI-TOF/TOF and ICP-MS capabilities; and (3) The Center for Ultrastructural Studies with light, atomic force and scanning electron microscopes. Additional resources at neighboring institutions include SUNYMAC (http://www.upstate.edu/sunymac/), a molecular core facility at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Starting Salary: Commensurate with experience.
