Title of Position
Stewards VISTA: Freshwaters IllustratedPosition Details
Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIPP in partnership with the Freshwaters Illustrated is hiring an intern to target K-12 teachers with a focus on underserved teachers who have not historically used our resources as members.
Freshwaters Illustrated has created unique and immersive educational video, storytelling, and illustrative tools for educators since 2003, with an emphasis on college educators. The outcome we are working toward is not only an increased student literacy in science and conservation of freshwater ecosystems, but a greater awareness for their societal importance and benefits for diverse communities (e.g., drinking water, healthy fisheries, recreational and spiritual opportunities), and familiarity with the career opportunities that exist in these fields, particularly for rural environments and communities that rely on natural resource- and agriculture-based economies. VISTA would work towards the preparation and launch of this program. By engaging K-12 Teachers through this more focused program, we are working toward building watershed, science, and conservation literacy in communities across the US, along with an increased awareness of opportunities for careers, volunteerism, and community health and sustainability through the protection and restoration of our most precious and valuable natural resource. As a small nonprofit organization, this VISTA supported project will provide a significant increase in our capacity to serve communities throughout the US through the youth educators who are woven into the fabric of every local community.Member Duties :
VISTA will: Review existing educational films, imagery, curriculum guides, and delivery platforms, and refining and further adapting these to be most effective and accessible for K-12 teachers. Develop additional resources that utilize VISTA intern skills (e.g., Spanish language, art, media, pedagogy) to fill gaps in content materials. Promote Water Teachers program to under-resourced teachers through conference presentations, workshops, social media, and mailings to our existing network of 200+ K-12 teachers across the US. Engage with new Water Teachers to ensure effective use and adoption of content. Solicit feedback from initial Water Teachers, and evaluation that will lead to improvement of the creation and delivery of educational resources.
