Job Title: Environmental Specialist- Sturgeon Program Support

Location: Gloucester, MA or Remote

Description

IBSS is seeking a Full Time Environmental Specialist to provide technical assistance to support the Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon recovery program carried out pursuant to sections 4, 7, and 10 of the ESA. The Specialist will support development of a recovery plan for the Gulf of Maine, New York Bight, and Chesapeake Bay distinct population segments of Atlantic sturgeon. This will include literature reviews and development of draft sections of a recovery plan and white papers supporting background information as well as supporting the development of recovery criteria and recovery actions.

Key Responsibilities:.

Support one or more virtual or in-person workshops related to recovery plan development.
To support ESA section 7 consultations for sturgeon, the contractor shall identify priority threats to shortnose and Atlantic sturgeon, research potential actions to address those threats, and develop white papers or other documentation to support assessment and management of those threats, including development of best management practices. This work may involve coordination and meetings with sturgeon researchers, academics, stakeholders, and federal and state partners.
Participate and/or present at public and/or scientific meetings or conferences as required; in addition to providing support to NMFS staff in attendance at these meetings.
Assist with implementation of programs carried out under section 10 of the ESA, including preparation of documents to support the development and issuance of Incidental Take Permits for ESA listed sturgeon.
Assist in ensuring that materials developed to support the Students Collaborating to Undertake Tracking Efforts for Sturgeon (SCUTES) educational program are based on the best available scientific information and incorporate current technologies. This may involve cooperating with researchers and/or educators and participating in appropriate conferences, trainings, or meetings, to advance the SCUTES program.

Required Skills /Education/ Certifications & Qualifications:

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in an environmental science or associated discipline (e.g., biology, ecology, fisheries biology, marine biology, natural resource management, conservation biology, landscape ecology, or restoration ecology).
Experience providing biological, economic, or social analyses to support recommendations for natural resource conservation measures.
Critical thinking and the ability to assess potential impacts to living marine resources.
Proficient with common databases and office productivity programs, such as Word, Excel, Gmail, Google docs, and Endnote.
Strong organizational skills with ability to work independently and comply with project deadlines.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with others, including a diverse array of federal action agencies.
Strong professional writing skills and the ability to express both biological and regulatory concepts in plain language.

Desired Skills:

Knowledge of marine ESA-listed species and their habitats, particularly those found along the east coast.

Experience developing policy or procedures for the management and conservation of marine resources including protected species, marine fish, mammals, or sea turtles.
