Job Summary:

The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) serves as the public, environmental and occupational health laboratory for the State of Wisconsin. This position independently provides a wide variety of program support for the Environmental Health Division at the WSLH's Agriculture Drive location in Madison. This position functions as part of our internal and external customer support team, providing general and technical support to lab personnel, state and federal agencies and private citizens. This position is responsible for receiving, preparing and logging in Environmental Health Divisions samples. Working conditions are primarily in a laboratory setting.

Laboratory Support
Responsible for opening and processing incoming environmental samples, verifying and documenting sample condition, adding acid to samples as required, performing pH tests on specific samples as required and entering of sample details into Laboratory Information System (LIMS) and assign tests to samples. Coordinate data flow through QA/QC processes. Transport samples throughout the division.

May assist with lab support of departmental sample check-in throughout the day. Enter public and private drinking water sample data into Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Keep detailed records and assess data to maintain highest quality of service. Query database for sample status and release data and reports to customers. Set up new clients and project profiles in the LIMS. Coordinate data flow through QA/QC processes.

Administrative Support
Serves as a point of contact for both internal and external customers. This may include responding to inquiries, taking orders for water testing kits, interpret EPA Safe Drinking Water Act and Wisconsin DNR rules and regulations for private and public drinking water. A wide range of other duties as needed including water test kit productions and assist in other areas of support within the Horizon Data Management Team.

Responsibilities:

Works with environmental scientists and others to identify, assess, treat, and correct environmental problems.
  • 15% May collect, document, and transport environmental samples
  • 5% May investigate complaints as directed
  • 23% Keeps detailed records and assesses test data to maintain highest quality of service and performance
  • 22% Communicates results, feedback, or suggestions; and discusses trends, procedural questions, and concerns
  • 20% Reads and interprets test results
  • 15% Serves as a point of contact for internal and external customers - responding to inquires and route more complex inquires to the appropriate entities

Education:

Preferred

Qualifications:

1 year of customer service and data entry experience preferred.

Self-starter with a willingness to work as part of a team. Demonstrate exceptional verbal communication and possess organizational skills and an attention to detail. Ability to maintain calm demeanor and pleasant attitude in fast paced environment.

7:45am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Terminal appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended based on need and/or funding.

Salary:

Minimum $18.95 HOURLY
