SCA Resource Technician Intern at Big Bend National Park (BIBE). The objective of this position is to have an intern in the Science and Resource Management Division who assists the program on projects to restore grasslands and riparian corridors along the Rio Grande. The position would assist with backcountry management topics that are associated with visitor use and the protection of wildlife. The position will work directly with the Wildlife Biologist and Botanist at BIBE. The position will gain a wide array of planning and resource management experience. Additionally, the position will assist on a number of other resource management efforts associated with vegetation and wildlife management within BIBE. Major duties for this position will focus on vegetation and wildlife management by completing the following actions: learn the park resources and setting, work on improving wildlife habitats through invasive plant control and maintaining wildlife cameras to determine habitat use and distribution of mammals in BIBE. Other work components include invasive plant control, monitoring plant populations, assisting researchers during field surveys, and assisting the Chief of Science and Resource Management when volunteer work groups are in the park restoring degraded ecosystems. Living Allowance: $225.00 per weekTravel Allowance: $1,100.00 one timeConditions of EmploymentRequired to demonstrate full vaccination status for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) with a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized or FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccine.
Big Bend National Park is one of the largest National Parks in the lower 48 States. Located in southern Brewster county, the park occupies over 800,000 acres of protected lands. The park preserves a large part of the Chihuahuan desert and is very warm in the summer months and mild in winter. The volunteer would live at Panther Junction, a small community inside the park consisting of employees and volunteers. The park is known for amazing dark night skies, great hiking, and great canoeing down the Rio Grande. The park is also located on the border with Mexico and is considered an isolated park. Terlingua, a small community, west of Panther Junction, 30 miles, has a grocery store and a number of public events to enjoy over the year. The towns of Marathon and Alpine are both north of the park about 100 miles. The Science and Resource Management Division at Big Bend has been working on cultural resource projects since the 1940s and has a museum program to match this long history.
Training will include field survey and equipment use from park staff. Use of GPS and GIS.
Educational opportunties include resource management skills. Recreation includes canoeing, hiking, biking, and camping. Big Bend offers a broad array of opportunities.

The park is in a very isolated location. Groceries are a minimum of 30 miles away. The member should plan on driving to the park and using personal vehicle at times to get needed supplies.

Housing will be in a shared apartment, usually with other SCAs or seasonal resource management staff. Usually, the volunteer will have their own bedroom, with shared kitchen and living area. Distance from the work office is a 5 minute walk.
