Conceptualized on the theme of abandoned oil rigs in the desert, the ultra-modern waterpark boasts of around 70 assets, including 36 rides and attractions, 7 restaurants/F&Bs and an impressive 85m high icon tower ride. What did our team in India deliver?Atkins in India, also referred to as the Global Technology Centre, within the organization was profoundly involved in the designing of this themed waterpark. Our multi-disciplinary team witnessed a striking collaboration amongst the disciplines of Architecture, Landscape, Structures, MEP, Utilities, Civils, MEPICA, to deliver the scheme, detailed tender and issued for construction (IFC) stage successfully, starting from 2018 through 2020. Overcoming hurdles, virtuallySince the IFC phase for the project started during the lockdown in March 2020, delivering a project of this scale and capability required unmatchable collaboration and effortless coordination across this 85-member team based in various global offices, with the majority being in India. The project had many building typologies spread across the area, comprising of reinforced concrete (RC), steel and timber structures. The incorporation of the requirements put forth by our multiple specialist consultants was another stumbling block for the team to deal with. "Working with the teams in India, over the past 12 months have been a revelation, but never more so than during the recent lockdown. The multi-disciplinary team in India, with whom we had worked so closely, often went above and beyond to deliver the final stage of what is a hugely complex project, whilst we were mobilizing to work remotely," added John Allen, UK Project ManagerValue additions we created for our clients and the society The proactiveness in using technology at every level to drive better and sustainable results enabled the team to ultimately render premium services to our clients. The successful delivery of this project entailed some pivotal value additions. Here's a look at them: •Using the right digital tools, effectively.•Automating repetitive tasks using state of the art applications.•Reducing manual paper-based reviews, especially during remote working.•Adopting a one-team approach to enhance collaboration amongst our teams, stakeholders, and clients. Project managers are vital members of the team on a construction project and are at the heart of every development they work on.They play an essential role in communication between the client and their team, all while making sure the project is completed on time and on budget - a challenging but immensely rewarding job!We heard from Deema, who works as a Project Manager in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Here's her take on what it's like to work as a project manager at Faithful+Gould, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group:Tell us a bit about yourself‘My name is Deema Nimatallah, Project Manager at Faithful+Gould. I have a bachelor's degree in Architecture and Design from Effat University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. I have always had a passion for the construction, entertainment, and housing industries. I am a risk-taker and I work well under pressure regardless of the task at hand.'What inspired you to become a Project Manager?‘I was inspired to become a Project Manager because I always enjoyed taking pictures of unique buildings and finding out how they were built. When I saw a building, I would think, "Who designed this remarkable project, what was the idea behind it, and how can I become a part of this industry?" After completing my studies in Architecture and Design, this was something I was able to manifest through my work at Faithful+Gould.'Encouraging people to pursue their passions is extremely important to us. We want our people to enjoy their jobs, feel challenged and ultimately know that they are progressing on their chosen career path - it's one of the main reasons why people choose to join us!What's the best project you've worked on and why?‘One of my favourite projects is Al Balad, which is the "Historic District" in Jeddah, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although the project duration was short, it is one of my preferred projects with Faithful+Gould since it is located in my hometown. I learned a lot about infrastructure design, project management, and how to handle historical sites in different situations. The most interesting part was visiting Al Balad, whenever we had a client meeting, and learning more about the project's renovation and the massive changes that will enrich this place and make it a focal tourism point.'Jeddah's Al Balad is famous for its uniquely designed houses which are built using coral from deep in the Red Sea, with colourful rawasheen balconies, or mashrabiyas. Across the Middle East, we're known at SNC-Lavalin for our expertise in developing modern and unique structures, whilst preserving or incorporating the region's unique heritage and traditions. What is a typical day like in your role as a Project Manager?‘My typical day starts with three cups of coffee, having a quick chat with my boss, then going to meetings and working on assignments. Once I look at the clock, it is already about time to go home! As part of my role, I develop key project documents such as the 120 Days Deliverable Plan, which outlines the project deliverables and delivery dates, and the project management plan. It's one of the most complex documents as it involves a large number of team members.'What's the best thing about being a Project Manager?‘The best thing about being a Project Manager is understanding the fundamentals of your job and the responsibilities you have. Being confident and having high-quality standards is also an important aspect of being able to do your work well. Moreover, it is key to network with individuals in the same field to learn new skills and expand your knowledge.'At SNC-Lavalin, we encourage teams across our business to network, collaborate and share skills and knowledge because we know it helps our people to grow and develop. What is the most challenging thing about your job?‘The most challenging thing about my job is managing deliverables with the team and the clients. Time management is absolutely critical, and I have to remind the team about our deadlines which can sometimes be stressful for them, but unfortunately, that is part of my job.'Balancing multiple responsibilities in the role of a project manager can be challenging but ultimately it is very rewarding. If you're just starting out a career as a project manager, we've put together 4 project management principles to apply in your next construction project to get you started. What advice would you give to other females who want to become Project Managers in Saudi Arabia?‘One piece of advice I would give to females who want to become project managers is to be confident and speak up when they witness something wrong that needs flagging. Always have a positive mindset and be patient.'This is great advice from Deema. The construction industry is going through a period of change as it becomes increasingly diverse, so speaking up when things aren't right is vital for learning lessons along the way.How do you think we can encourage more girls to study Architecture?‘Architecture is a wonderful field; however, it really depends on each person's interests. Following the Saudi 2030 Vision, people are more aware of ongoing projects and the demand for female engineers in the construction industry. This aligns with the national agenda because these females will not only leave a fingerprint on these projects but also be serving their country.'Deema is absolutely spot on, and at SNC-Lavalin, we know that females working in construction are helping the Middle East build bigger and better, so we'll continue to support them to do so.Project management careers at SNC-LavalinHave you been inspired by Deema's story?
