The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Baylor College of Medicine delivers cutting-edge research focused on cancer biology, stem cell biology, developmental biology, and neurobiology. The J-Van Nostrand lab is a CPRIT funded laboratory studying the role of metabolic check points in hepatocellular and lung carcinoma, using novel genetically-engineered and humanized mouse models. The selected individual will be an enthusiastic, detail-oriented individual performing lab maintenance, basic cell culture work including primary cells, animal studies in metabolism and cancer, and maintaining the mouse colony.
The candidate chosen to fill this position will work with postdocs, research technicians, and senior Faculty members to perform all experiments to achieve the goal of this project. They will oversee this research project and relay their findings to Dr. Van Nostrand. The results of the research and their findings will result in additional funding and findings of the needed research in the area of understanding the role of metabolic checkpoints in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma, especially in the context of metabolic disease such as obesity and Type II Diabetes. This position will require occasional weekend hours. Job Duties
- Plans, directs and conducts specialized and advanced research experiments.
- These will included cell culture, western blot, PCR applications, mouse handling and colony maintenance, and mouse cancer and metabolomic studies. Evaluates and analyzes data.
- These will include compiling data, analyzing results, making conclusions about the studies performed, and implementing follow-up studies or conclusions as necessary (ie identifying genotypes of mice to maintain mouse lines) May establish new research protocols and procedures.
- These will include learning and implementing new mouse studies (ie humanized liver transplants) and setting up standard operating procedures for maintaining lab stocks and mouse colony.
- Trains and orients less experienced research staff Summarizes research findings and publish results in research journals as directed and reviewed by the PI.
- His will include generating figures and writing method and results sections for publication. Join lab group meetings and share the results of their lab findings.
- This will include compiling study results, drawing conclusions, and presenting them in either small group or formal lab meetings.
- Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
- Three years of relevant experience.
- Master's degree in a related field.
- Have a research background in the specific area of mouse studies.
