We have an immediate opening for an associate public affairs specialist to join our Pasadena, California office as part of a team-based communication and engagement group. The Public Affairs team conducts its work nationally, with a primary focus on California water resource, environmental management, land management, and strategic consulting. We achieve results through effective stakeholder communication and engagement in close collaboration and coordination with Stantecs industry-leading technical experts. Stantec seeks a talented and entrepreneurial individual with substantial experience and a network of contacts focused on multi-party collaborative processes, public policy review and analysis, public relations, and media relations. The selected candidate will be a strong writer who demonstrates a personal commitment to prepare and deliver messages and materials that help stakeholders of different backgrounds and interests tangibly connect to complex and technical topics. Prior employers might include firms, agencies and companies that provide services in the fields of facilitation, mediation, public relations, government affairs, journalism, and other related fields, such as water resource planning, community development, and public policy development.

Your Key Responsibilities

Plan and implement public information and public affairs programs.

Lead development and distribution of collateral materials drawn from technical reports, interviews, and independent research.

Lead planning, implementation, and facilitation of multi-party small- and large-scale meetings and forums in virtual and in-person formats.

Develop and manage social media, multimedia, and various web projects and programs.

Develop, implement, and analyze stakeholder and public opinion polls/surveys, focus groups, and associated methods of surveying public opinion and perspectives.

Prepare grant and loan proposals on behalf of local public agencies.

Coordinate with clients, regulatory agencies, and subcontractors.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Excellent written and oral communication skills with a demonstrated ability to adapt to different audiences.

Strong interpersonal and entrepreneurial abilities and a proven track record for working independently was well as part of a diverse team of staff, clients, and stakeholders.

Experience in the following subject matter areas preferred, but not required:
  • California water resources (including river systems/water-related infrastructure and applicable laws/policies/regulations) and federal planning processes.
  • Surface water, groundwater, and recycled water supply projects.
  • Flood management and conveyance.
  • Natural resource management and environmental restoration.
  • Western U.S. water resources industry, infrastructure and applicable laws, policies, and regulations.
  • California Native American Tribes, environmental justice, and disadvantaged communities.

Experience in the following technical areas preferred, but not required:
  • Technical writing and editing of complex integrated water resource programs and projects.
  • Major marketing campaigns and new business development.
  • Multimedia marketing and advertising campaigns.

Education and Experience

Masters or bachelors degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in journalism, environmental policy or management, public relations, science communication, political science, English, or a closely related field. Extensive professional experience in a facilitation or public affairs role may be a substitute for coursework in an unrelated field.

Five or more years professional experience.
