Boulder Scientific Company (BSC) is headquartered in Mead, CO, and is a premier provider of organometallic compounds and other specialty chemicals used in a wide range of applications. BSC is a pioneer and leading manufacturer of metallocene catalysts and co-catalysts that are primarily used to produce metallocene polyethylene, polypropylene and elastomers, but also supplies products into Electronics, Pharmaceutical and Defense applications. BSC operates two sites in Northern Colorado, which include: a main production facility in Mead and a second facility in Longmont. BSC has continuously grown the sales of its products to existing and new customers and expects to continue on a high growth trajectory.

We are seeking a knowledgeable Manager, Environmental for our expanding Environmental, Health and Safety function. The primary responsibility of this position is the management of environmental compliance activities at the BSC Mead and Longmont facilities. This position is responsible for the continuous improvement of Environmental programs including waste minimization, SPCC, storm water management, waste water management, air compliance management and sustainability.

Job Responsibilities
  • Manages the hazardous waste program: profiles waste for proper disposal, evaluates waste disposal options, negotiates contracts and selects vendors for waste disposal, facilitates shipments of waste, manages waste documentation to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, trains operators on proper waste management procedures, facilitates waste minimization program.
  • Manages the solid waste program including opportunities to expand the recycling program and development of sustainable processes to manage and store hazardous and non-hazardous materials.
  • Manages waste water processes and applies continuous improvement to reduce risk and optimize processes.
  • Manages all site environmental programs including Storm Water, SPCC and ODS.
  • Oversees the Air compliance program including the management of air consultants.
  • Submission of reports including biennial hazardous waste report, TRI, and Tier II.
  • Interfaces with environmental regulatory agencies.
  • Reviews SOPs to ensure ongoing environmental compliance.
  • Oversees management of control technologies including thermal oxidizer, catalytic oxidizer, carbon filtration, scrubbers, and other devices.
  • Supervises environmental technicians including hiring, performance evaluation, training, coaching, and daily management of assignments.
  • Leads companywide environmental and hazardous waste training programs.
  • Works closely with Production Operations to manage waste disposal including process optimization.
  • Manages the Risk Management Programs and actively participates on the Process Safety Management Team.
  • Active member of the Emergency Response Team and carries out Emergency Coordinator responsibilities
  • Assesses storage and warehousing of hazardous materials for proper storage and containment.
  • Performs audits of the Environmental Management system and facilities.
  • Participates in capital project review and ensures compliance with all new installations.
  • Leads the Environmental Sustainability Team.

Qualifications

BS degree in environmental or chemical engineering or chemistry with six to ten years of growing responsibility and experience in an environmental function and at least three years managing employees

Experience
  • At least four years of experience managing hazardous waste
  • Extensive training in regulations:
  • RCRA
  • CAA
  • CWA
  • EPCRA
  • OSHA
  • HMT (DOT)
  • Foundational understanding of chemistry:
  • Knowledge of specific chemicals
  • Mass balance
  • Practical chemical handling
  • Plant operations as needed for waste processing
  • Plant operations as needed for waste generation knowledge
  • The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a strong understanding of Federal, State and local environmental regulations with demonstrated experience applying strong management and leadership skills to optimize programs and processes
  • Must pass a job-related physical exam.

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee will be working in laboratories, manufacturing areas, and storage facilities that require the use of PPE.
