Overview

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist will have functional responsibility for:
  • Providing site-level safety leadership and promoting environmental, health, and safety compliance and excellence at a radiochemical manufacturing facility.
  • Establishing and leading the POINT EHS Program as it relates to emergency preparedness, hazard communication, accident and incident reporting, compressed gas safety, and the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Performing comprehensive Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) and providing field presence for various manufacturing and laboratory activities to ensure appropriate controls are being utilized and JHA recommendations have been appropriately implemented.
  • Developing and implementing EHS procedures and processes to ensure compliance with regulatory and POINT requirements with accompanying recognition, development, and coordination of required safety training.
  • Proactively identifying potential safety hazards and initiating corrective actions and performing extent-of-condition evaluations to formalize systematic improvement of the site EHS program.
  • Preparing hazardous chemical/substance storage and inventory reports for submission to the State, if applicable, and maintaining a current account of hazardous materials in storage and released from the site for proper disposal.
  • Developing and maintaining waste disposal vendor relationships, and performing on-site waste processing, packaging, and recordkeeping in preparation for compliant waste shipments, while coordinating with Radiation Safety to ensure all hazardous wastes are suitable for release from the site.
  • The position is based in Indianapolis, Indiana, U.S. and reports to the Director, Environmental Health and Radiation Safety. The position will observe typical business hours, Monday thru Friday. Some evening or weekend work may be required on a minimum basis.

Key Objectives
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive Environmental, Health, and Safety Program that encompasses all aspects of radiochemical development, manufacturing, testing, packaging, and waste management.
  • Maintain all necessary wastewater, hazardous waste, solid waste, and other environmental reporting and permits.
  • Ensure SDS and chemical inventories are current and accessible to all site personnel, updating the hazard communication program as necessary.
  • Develop and lead implementation of incident reporting for work-related injuries, near misses, and safety observations both internal to POINT and per OSHA requirements.
  • Develop and implement an EHS safety and training program that includes all aspects of occupational health and safety per OSHA regulations.

Key Accountabilities
  • Assist in the development and operation of air, wastewater, hazardous waste, solid waste, and other environmental monitoring and disposal procedures, and associated reporting and permits.
  • Prepare and deliver ongoing safety training with the goal of driving safety-first culture and zero safety-related incidents in the facility.
  • Collaborate with site leadership to understand and address areas of opportunity and drive continuous improvement.
  • Act as a subject matter resource for site staff on the full suite of OSHA, DOT, EPA, and similar federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Support facility personnel in the selection of appropriate personal protective equipment for each task.
  • Audit and inspect the facility to ensure compliance with company, local, state, and federal regulations offering solutions and facilitating effective implementation of corrections to any audit findings.
  • Participate in corporate and regulatory compliance audits and inspections; interact with regulators, auditors, and investors during assessments leading efforts to address identified gaps.
  • Assist with administration of the site respiratory protection program. Provide technical support for non-radiological employee exposure assessments and controls.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and CAPA development and implementation as a part of safety incident investigations.
  • Evaluate and aid in the control of potential employee exposure to chemical, physical, and biological hazards encountered in the workplace through the use of appropriate tools, risk analysis techniques, and assessments.
  • Foster a safety conscious work environment where employees are encouraged to raise safety concerns by promptly reviewing any concerns, assigned proper priority based on potential safety significance, and appropriately resolved with timely feedback to the originator of the concerns and to other employees as appropriate.
  • Engage is cross-functional teams in the implementation of EHS programs and the tabulation of relevant safety metrics.
  • Assist production, QC, maintenance, and shipping staff in the development of their function specific procedures with regard to operational safety issues and waste management.
  • Develop and implement a compliant hazardous waste storage area and running inventory, with established waste streams and workflows which facilitate timely disposition.
  • Assist in leading the facility emergency response team and provide reporting to the appropriate regulatory agencies as required.
  • Maintain in an organized fashion all regulatory required documents and records.
  • Work well in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education and Experience
  • BS/BA degree in basic science required; occupational/environmental safety or health science major is preferred.
  • MS in environmental science, occupational health, or industrial hygiene preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years professional EHS knowledge and experience is required; Certification by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (CSP) or as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is preferred.
  • An excellent understanding and knowledge of hazardous material, waste, and injury reporting requirements is essential.
  • Direct experience handling, processing, and shipping hazardous and biohazardous wastes is required.
  • Detailed knowledge of relevant EHS regulations such as Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is required.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety data sheets is required.
  • Experience working in a pharmaceutical GMP manufacturing environment is preferred.
