Environmental Scientist-Compliance | Essential Functions:

  • Complete management of projects including initial scoping, budget development, work plan development, oversight of field activities, reporting, communication with client and regulators, and understanding of objectives to achieve project completion.
  • Respond of behalf of clients to regulatory agencies. Submit the appropriate permits for client needs to regulatory agencies.
  • Complete and/or oversee sampling and analytical data evaluation for a variety of media. Including air, water, groundwater, wastewater, stormwater, hazardous waste, solid waste and soil.
  • Write reports such as Stormwater Prevention Pollution Plans (SWPPP) and Spill Prevention Pollution and Countermeasures (SPCC) Plans, conduct and compose compliance audit reports, and other reports as assigned.
  • Have knowledge of environmental laws and regulations, such as the Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
  • Properly complete paperwork to document field activities.
  • Serve as a leader during field activities with junior scientists/technicians.
  • Mentors junior staff and is responsible for training and project oversight and communicating project scheduling needs to the compliance project manager.
  • Provide oversight and complete documentation of subcontractor activities.
  • Carefully and accurately manage samples and paperwork and responsibly use scientific instruments.
  • Apply standard practices and techniques in specific situations, adjust and correlate data, recognize discrepancies in results and follow operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes.
  • Accurately complete billing, time sheets and expense reports by the required due date without prompting from management.
  • Provide troubleshooting and maintenance of mechanical and electronic systems including pumps and monitoring equipment.
  • Request information from various governmental and regulatory organizations.
  • Effectively and professionally interact with co-workers, clients, vendors, and other business contacts.
  • Travel up to 30% via driving a company vehicle.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Environmental Scientist-Compliance | Competencies:
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Superior research and technical writing skills are required with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and interpret a variety of maps and aerial photography.
  • Capable of managing deadline-driven projects and workload.
  • Understand and interpret regulatory guidelines.
  • Analyze numerical and graphic data.
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Prepare detailed reports.
  • Requires effective time management and change management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and delegate responsibility appropriately
  • Must be extremely reliable, have a curiosity for problem solving, a desire to learn and succeed and a high level of energy.
  • Ability to effectively and professionally interact with co-workers, clients, vendors, and other business contacts.
  • Ability to conduct data validation on laboratory reports.
  • Understanding of overarching components of mechanical and electronic remediation systems and functionality.
Environmental Scientist-Compliance | Position Type and Expected Hours:
  • This is a full-time position. Ability to work flexible hours with some weekend and holiday work required.
Environmental Scientist-Compliance | Education and Experience:
  • For insurability purposes a valid Driver's License is required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Geoscience, Physical Science, Environmental Science or a closely related field is required.
  • Three (3) years of compliance/environmental regulatory and permitting related work history is required.
  • Five (5) years of experience with permitting and compliance, communicating with regulators and working in the environmental field is preferred.
  • A Master's degree in Geoscience, Physical Science, Environmental Science or a closely related field is preferred.
  • Previous environmental consulting experience is preferred.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certified strongly preferred.
Environmental Scientist-Compliance | Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment. All employees are required to follow safety standards and wear all personal protective equipment in designated areas.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

This is a largely sedentary role; however the employee may frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
