The Massachusetts Department of Fish & Game works to preserve the state's natural resources and people's right to conservation of those resources, as protected by Article 97 of the Massachusetts Constitution. To carry out this mission, the Department exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife species, plants, and natural communities, as well as the habitats that support them. The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries serves Massachusetts citizens by protecting, restoring, and enhancing fishery resources and their habitats, while providing sustainable fisheries related recreational and commercial opportunities. These documents must be specifically attached to the requisition for which you are applying.* The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries seeks qualified applicants to serve as a Laboratory Technician II in the Age and Growth Lab. The individual in this position will aid in the ageing of fish in the Gloucester facility. This person will be responsible for preparing fish scales, otoliths, and other hard parts for ageing. This person will also be ageing fish and collecting data using image analysis software. Aiding in field work to collect samples for ageing will also be needed at times. DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Clean and mount scales from various species of fish to glass slides. 2. Section and/or polish otoliths in preparation for age reading. 3. Prepare other fish parts such as opercula for ageing. 4. Assist periodically in the collection of samples to age. 5. Assist in the ageing of various species of fish. 6. Use image analysis software and excel for data collection and entry. 7. Assist with other Division projects as directed by supervisor. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE (List knowledges, skills, abilities): 1. Ability to communicate effectively. 2. Knowledge of general laboratory techniques. 3. Knowledge of the techniques used in handling laboratory samples. 4. Ability to understand and apply the policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities. 5. Ability to multi-task and prioritize. 6. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. 7. Ability to maintain accurate records. 8. Ability to work in a team setting. 9. Manual dexterity. 10. Ability and willingness to do repetitive tasks. 11. Organizational skills. Proficient with Microsoft Excel. QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON THE JOB: 1. Knowledge of image analysis software. 2. Knowledge of ageing protocols. REMARKS: This position will require someone willing to help occasionally with other projects within the agency, which may require working unusual hours. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of acurrent and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operators Class D license or equivalent license from the state in which you reside. First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in laboratory work in a recognized clinical, medical, hospital, chemical, water quality, public health, biological, bacteriological, marine sciences or materials testing laboratory, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. An Associate's degree or higher with a major in medical technology chemistry, bacteriology, food science and technology, environmental science, chemical or environmental engineering, wastewater technology, oceanography or the biological sciences may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience. II. The successful completion of one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, education toward a degree at a recognized medical or dental school may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience. III. The successful completion of training in a recognized school or hospital course, or an American Medical Association (AMA) approved training program for laboratory technicians or medical technologists may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience. IV. Registration as a medical technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the International Society for Clinical Laboratory Technicians or American Medical Technologists or as a bacteriologist by the National Registry of Microbiologists may be substituted for the required experience. Special Requirements: None.
