Job Title:

Environmental Health & Safety Specialist

Qualifications:

Master's degree in a scientific discipline (i.e. Biology, Biochemistry, etc.) or Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline (i.e. Biology, Biochemistry, etc.) with 2+ years working laboratory experience

Associate degree in a scientific discipline (i.e. Biology, Biochemistry, etc.) with 4+ years working laboratory experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, animal science, industrial hygiene or related field.
  • 3+ years of related experience in environmental safety.
  • 1-3 years' experience in the lab, biological safety, bench research or biopharma R&D.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State environmental and safety regulations.
  • Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions.
  • Ability to develop biological safety documents and reports that are compliant with applicable standards and regulations.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with laboratory personnel, facilities, and management to provide solutions to complex problems.
  • Strong presentation, communication, and root cause analysis skills are needed.
  • Proficient use of PC-based application (MS Office, on-line training software, EPA and OSHA regulatory packages).
  • Ability react calmly and effectively in an emergency.


Job Summery: The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist reports directly to the Senior Director of Operation with responsibilities centered around management of crucial environmental health and safety protocols. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring safety and environmental programs to ensure compliance with Federal and State Agencies. This position will support three facilities.

Corporate Responsibilities:
  • Adherence to laboratory health and safety procedures.
  • Adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Adherence to applicable company policies and guidelines.
  • Adherence to federal and/or local regulations, as applicable.


Position Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for company safety programs to ensure the safety and welfare of staff.
  • Oversee Safety Committee, medical surveillance program, regulatory compliance, safety training, facility safety inspections and test material safety evaluation and reviews.
  • Manage the environmental programs including ensuring that proper and current Federal and State permits, and licenses are maintained.
  • Maintain database of various certifications, SDS, safety manuals and other documents.
  • Design, plan, and implement procedures for the prevention, control, and remediation of health hazards.
  • Manage the hazardous waste program including classifying all hazardous wastes, collection of hazardous wastes throughout the facility, storage of the hazardous wastes, and arranging for timely removal of the wastes from the facility with licensed waste disposal companies.
  • Oversee shipping and receiving and assure all shipments are shipped in accordance with IATA and DOT regulations.
  • Maintain all hazardous waste disposal and maintain manifest logs.
  • Prepare required regulatory reports including OSHA 300/300A and EPA Biennial Waste.
  • Conduct regular in-house EHS inspections of the facility, materials, and equipment in concordance with regulatory requirements and best practices.
  • Oversee safety requirements for study specific materials and procedures.
  • Responsible for OSHA programs such as Respiratory Protection, Blood Borne Pathogen, Formaldehyde and Hearing Conservation.
  • Work with the Attending Veterinarian and the IACUC to maintain industry expectations regarding worker safety in accordance with PHS and AWA requirements, and AAALAC best practices.
  • Work with Human Resources regarding workers compensation claims.
  • Responsible for Health and Safety aspects for the New Employee Orientation program.
  • Schedule new employee and annual refresher environmental and safety training utilizing Safety Skills on-line training programs.
  • Maintain and update all emergency contact lists, emergency evacuation facility maps, safety posters, and schedule annual fire drill with local authorities.
  • Responds to emergency situations involving hazardous chemicals and/or biological materials, fire and smoke incidents, or unknown hazards and provide recommendations.
  • Assist with regulatory inspections to represent EH&S programs.
  • Assist in the investigation process of any accidents, injuries, near misses, or occupational diseases to determine causes and preventive measures.
  • Recommend process and product safety features that will reduce employees' exposure to chemical and physical work hazards.
  • Interact as needed with clients, inspectors, subcontractors, and other individuals. Evaluate standard requirements for clients.
  • Follow safety guidelines for handling materials with the use of protective equipment as required.

Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in a lab environment.

Physical Demands:
  • While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend/stoop.
  • The employee is required to walk, reach above, use hands for pushing/pulling and fine manipulation. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


Working Environment
  • While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee could be exposed to fluctuations in air temperature caused by refrigerator/washing equipment, and/or outside weather conditions prevalent at the time. Live animals are present at one facility. The stress level in this position is considered moderate.
