About Freenome

Freenome is a high-growth biotech company on a mission since 2014 to create tools that empower everyone to prevent, detect, and treat their disease. To achieve this mission, Freenome is developing next-generation blood tests to detect cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages using our multiomics platform and machine learning techniques. Our first blood test will detect early-stage colorectal cancer and advanced adenomas.

As an intern in the Computational Biology team, you will work with other computational and assay development scientists to investigate sources of variability in Freenome's circulating cell-free DNA methylation assay. During this internship, you will learn about liquid biopsy assay development and gain valuable industry experience working on experimental assay validation in a regulated environment. The ideal candidate will have strong computational skills, an interest in learning how next generation sequencing (NGS) data can be used for early cancer detection, and prior experience analyzing biological data. This is a 12-week, paid, remote internship position with a flexible start date.

Your Contribution:
  • Work with laboratory scientists to understand, compile, and standardize metadata across several experiments.
  • Perform statistical analyses (e.g. linear regression, time series analysis, causal inference, or other approaches, depending on the candidate's background and skill set) to identify root causes of variability in sequencing metrics and increase the robustness of Freenome's assays.
  • Document and submit analysis code for code reviews.
  • Present findings to the Laboratory and Computational Science teams at the end of the internship.

Your background, perspective, and experience:
  • Currently enrolled in a MS or PhD program in mathematics, statistics, bioinformatics, data science, or related field.
  • Strong applied statistics and data visualization skills (knowledge of causal inference methods and packages a plus).
  • Proficient in R and/or Python (experience with version control a plus).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with experimental scientists.
  • Experience analyzing NGS data preferred.
