Description:
The Wildlife Biologist works under the direct supervision of the Snoqualmie Indian Tribe's (Tribe) Environmental and Natural Resources (ENR) Director. The Wildlife Biologist is responsible for developing and implementing the Tribe's Wildlife Program. This position provides program leadership, management, and wildlife expertise services to achieve the Tribe's mission to maximize and protect wildlife and gathering opportunities. The primary duties of this position will be to investigate, survey, review, and provide management recommendations/comments to the ENR Director, the Governmental Affairs & Special Projects team and tower, and others as necessary. The Wildlife Biologist is responsible for data collection and analysis that will be used to identify and protect wildlife on Snoqualmie Tribe ancestral lands. This position develops support for species and habitat management plan development, population surveys and monitoring, and wild animal damage response. This position will work with tribal departments to integrate traditional ecological knowledge into this management and assist with outreach to tribal members. This employee will work both independently and collaboratively when conducting professional biological studies and/or research and provides analysis and assessment of fish, wildlife, lands or habitat management data. This position requires balanced office and fieldwork in all weather and terrain conditions. The position may be grant funded and contingent on continued grant awards that the incumbent will take a lead role in developing with assistance from the grant/funding support team.

The Wildlife Biologist is responsible for implementing the Wildlife Program for the Tribe. This work includes Wildlife Management Plan development, species identification and inventory, endangered species management, development of goals with the Harvesting Program, and working with the ENR, Culture and Government Affairs and Special Projects (GASP) Departments. This position will also include working with Tribal Police to further develop and enforce the Tribe's Hunting and Gathering Code. Other job duties and responsibilities include the following:
  • Develops program planning goals with the ENR Director.
  • Coordinate with local, state, and federal natural resource management agencies, tribes, Non-Government Organizations, private landowners, and other entities to promote cooperative projects beneficial to wildlife species of historic and cultural significance.
  • Identifies wildlife species.
  • Conducts and coordinates field research including ground and aerial surveys of big game and sensitive species. Oversees data management and reporting to ensure that results from annual field work are accurately captured and memorialized in a format(s) that can be utilized and repeated in the future.
  • Collects and analyzes data.
  • Work with the Tribe's GIS Program staff to upload data to the Tribe's database
  • Performs routine visits of the Tribe's properties to monitor wildlife habitat and species abundance.
  • In coordination with the ENR Director and the Staff Attorney, drafts memorandum, codes, and regulations as they pertain to wildlife management. Presents scientific data, technical recommendations, and other guidance or input as requested.
  • Attends local, regional, and national meetings that relate to wildlife management and biology. Stays up-to-date with tribal and federal policies relating to wildlife.
  • Provides progress reports to the ENR director.
  • Coordinate with the ENR Director and Finance department to complete workplan tasks and follow grant reporting deadlines and
  • Prepare and submit grant reports and required data to the EPA, BIA and other funding agencies
  • Research program funding sources and prepare grant applications and workplans in coordination with the ENR Director
  • Creation of educational and outreach materials regarding wildlife, as needed
  • Other duties as requested by the ENR Director.
  • . Requirements:
    • A Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in Wildlife Biology or Wildlife Management, Natural Resource Sciences (Wildlife Directed Studies), or closely related field. OR a Master's Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in Wildlife Biology or Wildlife Management, Natural Resource Sciences (Wildlife Directed Studies), or closely related field.
    • A minimum of two years' experience in these, or a related field is required.
    • Experience working with tribes is highly preferred.

    • Experience in developing and implementing grant-funded projects.
    • Background in/exposure to Tribal Natural Resource programs and knowledge of legal and policy issues related to tribal treaty rights (e.g., fishing, hunting, gathering)
    • Experience in natural resource/wildlife management, methods and practices, with preference for experience in the Pacific Northwest.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) for document preparation, data entry/, management, presentations, scheduling, coordination, and electronic transmittal/communications).
    • Basic skills and knowledge of wilderness survival skills.
    • Expertise with GPS and GIS in field and office settings including map preparation, spatial analysis, remote data downloading, integration of GPS and GIS hardware and software.
    • Must maintain strict confidentiality at all times.
    • Knowledge of wildlife biology and population dynamics, life history, habitat requirements, and applicable environmental regulations.
    • Ability to coordinate multiple projects; design and develop wildlife habitat management plans; complete and write reports based on project results in a prescribed time period; communicate effectively with department staff, other governments, and the general public; provide technical direction to professional staff for complex projects; organize time effectively and to work beyond normal working hours when required to meet task objectives in a timely fashion.
    • Knowledge of state and federal environmental rules and regulations.
    • Requires knowledge of biological research and wildlife management methods, including knowledge of designing and implementing wildlife population studies.
    • Requires knowledge of standard laboratory and field methods and statistical data processing.
    • Knowledge of Washington State Forest Practice regulations.
    • Requires knowledge of how to develop and read maps and aerial photos, and conduct self-orientation in the field utilizing various instruments and reference resources.
    • Requires the ability to coordinate, lead, or supervise technical or nontechnical volunteer or staff.
    • Requires the ability to interpret hunting regulations.
    • Requires the ability to utilize computers for routine data analysis and word processing tasks.
    • Requires the ability to perform a variety of outdoor work in rugged, difficult terrain and in inclement weather.
    • Requires the ability to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles, ATV's and snowmobiles on rough, primitive roads and trails.
    • Requires the ability to operate chainsaws and other power and hand tools.
    • Requires the ability to make positive public contacts in the field; and assist in educational courses.
    • Requires the ability to complete repetitive tasks such as: testing equipment, spraying invasive species, entering large amounts of data, or working on computers for extended periods of time.
    • Requires the ability to sit or stand for considerable periods of time (hours).

    Physical Demands and Work Environment
    • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
    • The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; extreme cold and extreme heat, snow, ice, rain, and wind.
    • Field work for this position involves hiking (both on- and off-trail). The employee must be able to carry a backpack with field equipment and camping gear on steep and sometimes uneven terrain.
    • This position requires the ability to spend long periods of time at a computer drafting wildlife management materials, interpreting biological studies, data, and reviewing references and regulations.

    • Selected candidate must agree to be subject to the Tribe's Controlled Substance and Alcohol Testing Policy to include pre-employment screening.

    • Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted Washington State driver's license.

    • Compensation will be determined based on experience, starts at $61,131 per year.
