This role will be located at our research site in San Diego, CA. Director of Functional Genomics will be responsible for leading a group which develops and implements strategies to identify and validate new therapeutic approaches to treat respiratory and renal genetic diseases as well as chronic pain conditions. This is a highly visible role, providing the individual with an excellent opportunity to work closely with global research colleagues and to make a significant impact on patient health.Key Responsibilities:
  • Utilize state-of-the-art technologies of functional genomics, proteomics and morphological profiling combined with machine learning techniques to identify novel ways of targeting disease causing genes/ proteins
  • Apply functional genomics to interrogate complex disease mechanisms in relevant cellular models and patient samples
  • Link cell specific targeting strategies with therapeutic approach
  • Manages the activities of the team and provides them insightful guidance to succeed and grow
  • Interact with strategic internal & external partners to design and execute on specific project needs
  • Actively mentor and develop scientists
  • Collaborate in a cross-functional team, across several groups and project teams within the Vertex organization fostering a culture of engagement and scientific rigor
  • Facilitate communication between scientists of vastly different scientific backgrounds
Minimum Qualifications/Experience:
  • Ph.D., MD, PharmD or equivent degree in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or related disciplines and 9+ years of relevant post-doctoral employment experience
  • Master's or equivalent degree in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or related disciplines and 12+ years of relevant post-doctoral employment experience
  • Bachelors or equivalent degree in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or related disciplines and 15+ years of relevant employment experience
  • Extensive expertise in functional genomics, proteomics, cell specific targeting, including basic research and applications to drug discovery and delivery
  • Experience in leading independent research
  • Minimum 5 years of industry experience and in depth understanding of drug discovery process
  • Experience in effectively managing PhD level scientists
  • Demonstrable experience managing interdisciplinary groups
  • Strong problem solver who is highly organized with the ability to thrive and lead in a matrixed work environment with rapidly changing priorities
