Description

Summary

The Department of Anatomy at Midwestern University (Downers Grove, IL) seeks a full-time Research Assistant to support faculty research in various fields including vertebrate paleontology, evolutionary primatology, forensic anthropology, bioarcheology, evolutionary biology, and/or human anatomical sciences. This position reports to the Chair of Anatomy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Processing of CT and laser/surface scan data of specimens
  • 3D data collection, manipulation, and organization
  • Assisting with experimental and statistical analyses
  • Assisting in grant applications, manuscripts, and publications (e.g., figure creation, literature search, proofreading, scientific editing)
  • Maintaining lab inventory and ordering of lab supplies
  • Training and mentoring students in lab safety and research protocols
  • Working independently and with others
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

Familiarity with 3D image-processing software, micro-CT image acquisition, code-based statistical software, 3D printing, geometric morphometrics, phylogenetic methods, and/or Adobe Creative Suite (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator) are extremely desirable.

Excellent communication skills, attention to detail and ability to work independently and in a team environment are required. Excellent organizational skills and proficiency with Windows and MacOS operating system and Microsoft Office are required. English-language, reasoning, and mathematical skills are required. Manual dexterity and comfort handling cadaveric and osteological material.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelors degree in biological sciences or related field is required and a Masters level degree is strongly preferred with a background in anatomy, biology, or biomedical sciences. Preference will be given to applicants with backgrounds in paleontology, biological and/or forensic anthropology, anatomy, evolutionary biology, and/or zoology.

Computer Skills

Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) is required. Familiarity with 3D image-processing software (e.g., GeoMagic Studio, Amira/Avizo, Mimics), micro-CT image acquisition, code-based statistical software (e.g., SAS, R), 3D printing, geometric morphometrics, phylogenetic methods (e.g., PAUP, TNT, MrBayes, BEAST), and/or Adobe Creative Suite (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator) are extremely desirable.

Language Skills

Intermediate skills: The ability to read and interpret documents such as safety guidelines, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals is essential. The position requires the ability to write reports, correspondences, and to speak effectively before groups of people, such as students and co-workers. The ability to research, read, and summarize scientific literature is essential including the ability to read and edit manuscripts and grants with the respective research faculty.

Reasoning Ability

Intermediate skills: The ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. The ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Mathematical Ability

Intermediate skills: The ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. The position requires the ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Experience with 3D data and models, statistical analyses in related research fields, and coding is strongly preferred.
