Description of duties Working in the Watershed Lands and Community Planning Division under direction of the Supervisor of the Ecological Research and Assessment Group (ERA), the selected candidate will be the New York City Department of Environmental Protection's (DEP) Invasive Species Specialist, overseeing the Invasive Species Program, having knowledge and experience with both aquatic and terrestrial invasive species. The selected candidate will
  • plan and direct the technical and administrative operations of the Invasive Species Program including program development and implementation
  • meet all deliverables and deadlines for the 2012 Filtration Avoidance Determination (FAD) renewal including development of a comprehensive invasive species management strategy
  • chair the DEP Invasive Species Working Group
  • oversee all elements of DEP's Early Detection and Rapid Response plan
  • review construction plans and documents, State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) reviews, wetland permit applications and environmental impact statements for internal and sponsored projects within the watershed
  • make recommendations on reducing the potential for invasive species introductions and spread and provide comments/recommendations to the ERA Supervisor
  • assist in developing invasive species management plans
  • coordinate and implement invasive species management projects as needed and will train in-house staff on invasive species concerns and issues as assigned
  • manage procurements and contracts for invasive species projects and initiatives
  • train in-house staff on invasive species concerns and issues
  • serve as project supervisor working with contractors and/or partners for invasive species eradication efforts
  • liaise with other governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations and stakeholders.
Qualifications sought Masters Degree in one of the following areas:
environmental science, limnology, marine science, biology or A baccalaureate degree including or supplemented by 24 semester credits in the fields above and three years of satisfactory full-time experience not part of graduate or undergraduate course work
