Seed Laboratory Manager-BN8-Edible Bean Job Description

Job Summary:
This is an exempt level position that will coordinate lab operations to ensure that samples are logged in, prepared for testing, and tested to proper seed germination standard. The Lab Manager will also be responsible to verify testing results recorded in Total Lab Client (TLC), and moved into JDE in a timely manner. Tests must be prioritized based on processing schedule requirements along with any special testing requirements requested by operations management, inventory manager, or sales staff.
This position will ensure that all testing protocols, methods, evaluation interpretations, and reporting meet company quality standards. Compliance with Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA), Rules for Seed Testing, Canadian Methods and Procedures (M&P), and state crop improvement requirements must also be maintained.
This position in conjunction with operation management will maintain and update SOP/WI's associated with seed sampling, harvest sampling, mill product inspections, and treat/pack sampling. Process audits for receiving, milling, and treat/pack will be conducted annually to meet ADM internal standards and all state or federal regulations which will require travel to various locations as needed. This must be done to ensure the highest possible quality standards for finished product.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide advanced knowledge of seed testing rules for crop kinds as defined in the AOSA Rules for Testing Seed, Canadian M&P, and International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) Methods.
Exercise consistent discretion and judgment in seed testing evaluations to ensure compliance for State, Crop Improvement, Canadian seed standards, Federal Seed Act labeling, and noxious weed seed laws.
Analyze trends, identify risks, and advocate for new and improved processes, methods, and technologies to improve the efficiency and reliability of the functional department. Lead improvement projects both within the team and interdepartmentally.
Maintain a qualified and cooperative team by providing clear and constructive feedback to continuously support the professional development of seed lab technicians. Train, coach, and support the technicians in order to broaden their knowledge, increase problem-solving skills, and improve delegation.
Monitor and verify that resources (facilities, equipment, operating budget, and personnel) are sufficient to meet business needs. Provide a transparent view of testing capacity. Implement actions necessary to achieve agreed performance targets (safety, quality, efficiency, delivery, and involvement) and communicate gaps to Regional Superintendent and other stakeholders.
Assist in the development and implementation of a Quality Management System (QMS) for the lab to establish and maintain US Seed Laboratory (ASL) accreditation to facilitate trade with Canada.
Provide Reports of Analysis and other documents as needed for seed certification and seed commerce within the US and Canada.
Provide all safety, and compliance training for all employees at location, along with all ADM required monthly documentation for environmental and safety functions.
Maintain and purchase all supplies as needed for location. Monitor equipment maintenance and operation at location. Provide contract training per ADM requirements for contractors and vendors performing work on site.
Provide support for field staff, sales staff, research staff, and production staff as needed to facilitate accurate quality assessment for the movement of seed on behalf of ADM as directed by Regional Superintendent. Provide notification to appropriate department on all seed quality related issues. Provide support for all customer related issues as requested.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondences, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information, provide recommendations, and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and general public.
Proficient in MS Office Products; gain a working knowledge of ADM specific programs including but not limited to TLC/JDE for entering lab results, programs necessary for material procurement, and invoice processing, GEMINI, ERL, and Sphera Cloud (SC Pro).
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Basic understanding of Quality Management Systems, International Standards Organization (ISO) based preferred.

Educational Requirements:

Prefer a bachelor's degree (BA) from a four-year College or university, in scientific or Ag related field such as Botany, Pathology, Biology, etc. or three to five years of related experience.

Experience and Background:

Two to three years staff leadership.
Three to five years in an agriculture-testing laboratory overseeing or performing quality assessments.
Obtain status of Registered Seed Technologist (RST) from the Society of Commercial Seed Technologists (SCST) within three years of employment.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

Ability to remain in stationary positions for extended periods of time to conduct a variety of seed testing tasks.
Must be able to lift 25-30 pounds, stand for long periods of time, and the occasional need for kneeling, bending, twisting, etc.
Ability to work in laboratory setting as well as warehouse conditions as needed.
Ability to travel as needed to work with ADM locations in ID and WY, to attend industry related meetings as directed, ADM training as needed, to attend required AOSA/SCST annual meeting, and Commercial Seed Analyst Association of Canada (CSAAC) meeting.

    Must be able to lift up to 10lbs from waist to shoulder on a frequent basis
    Must be able to lift up to 30lbs from floor to waist on an occasional basis
    Must be able to lift up to 45lbs from waist to shoulder on an extremely limited basis

Must be able to push/pull up to 30lbs on an occasional basis
  • Standing/Walking/Sitting:
Must be able to stand 5-6 hours per 8 hour shift
Must be able to walk 3-4 hours per 8 hour shift
Must be able to sit 5-6 hours per 8 hour shift
  • Lower Extremities:
Must be able to bend, twist, squat or kneel on an occasional basis
Must be able to climb stairs/ladder on an occasional basis
  • Upper Extremities:
    Must be able to grip/grasp/pinch on a frequent basis
    Must be able to perform extended reach overhead work on an occasional basis
  • Equipment:
    Must be able to use computer mouse and perform keyboarding on a regular basis
    Must be able to operate lab equipment, i.e. seed counter, conductivity meter, riffle divider, purity board, etc.

  • Additional Requirement:
  • Travel to Idaho locations 2 to 3 times per quarter or as needed
  • Travel to WY locations 2 times per year
  • Travel cross country and to Canada 2 times per year
