Principal Scientist/Associate Director, Discovery Biology

Vesalius Therapeutics is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative Principal Scientist/ Associate Director with broad expertise in cell biology, biochemistry and project team leadership to join our growing team. As Principal Scientist/ Associate Director, Discovery Biology, you will report into the Senior Director, Discovery Biology and play an essential role within an interdisciplinary team driving advances for Vesalius' drug discovery programs. You will work closely with biologists, chemists, computer scientists and geneticists to elucidate novel disease-implicated pathways identified through the company's proprietary approach. This is a leadership position where you will make vital contributions to platform innovation, target identification and target validation.

What You'll Do:

• Lead a cross-functional project team to successfully advance a therapeutic asset towards IND
• Design and implement robust functional cell-based and/or biochemical experiments that test key hypotheses and enable therapeutics testing in relevant systems

• Collaborate seamlessly with the Computational Biology and Data Science team in evaluation of targets, experimental design, and data interpretation to successfully progress scientific objectives

• Perform experiments, critically analyze results, identify next steps, and communicate findings to enable robust conclusions and data-driven decision making
• Serve as the lead in biochemistry and cell biology efforts for drug discovery projects
• Mentor direct reports, supporting them in achieving their deliverables and in advancing their scientific and career development

• Provide expert input into evaluating and understanding the biology of complex diseases with the goal of identifying tractable therapeutic targets
• Bring forward plans to validate hypotheses, devise experimental work plans, and manage the execution of multiple work plans in a matrix research environment

• Maintain scientific and technical expertise by keeping up to date with the scientific literature
• Provide cutting edge laboratory expertise and continually develop new scientific approaches

What You'll Bring:

• Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Genetics or related discipline with 10 or more years of industry (preferred) or academic experienceProficiency in cell and molecular biology techniques with proven hands-on experience with a variety of approaches such as FACS, ELISA, qPCR, immunoblotting, immunostaining, RNAi and overexpression, high-content and confocal imaging
• Expertise in designing and executing biochemical and cell-based assays and utilizing mammalian cell culture to support drug discovery efforts
• Experience leading a team in a leadership capacity
• Demonstrated success in managing and mentoring direct reports
• Ability to lead projects and manage internal and external resources to deliver results

• A track record of scientific rigor and creativity in carrying out research goals and objectives
• Broad expertise in cell, molecular and biochemical biology of complex diseases
• Strong communication skills, able to effectively engage, collaborate with and motivate scientists at all levels
• Experience with human stem cell derived cellular models is desirable
