The Infectious Diseases Discovery group at Janssen Biopharma Inc. is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Scientific Director to lead nonclinical microbiology studies to support IND submissions for novel antibacterial therapeutic agents. You will collaborate with a diverse group of scientists to lead discovery microbiology aimed at identifying and validating novel and differentiated treatment approaches and therapeutic modalities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Leading an antibacterial microbiology team to develop and support novel therapeutic agents
  • Providing leadership and expertise for small molecules and/ biologic/phage drug project teams to optimize candidates
  • Planning and implementing of antimicrobioal studies with high standards for the technical performance of the laboratory, including design oversee and execution of experiments and the accuracy, quality and timely reporting of work conducted
  • Responsible for generation of all reports intended for regulatory submission from non-clinical pharmacology sections
  • Contributing to the strategic direction for Janssen's microbiology discovery pipeline
  • Evaluating new bacteriology targets, therapeutic concepts, and therapeutic agents
  • Managing a team of high performing scientists as part of a dynamic and interactive infectious disease discovery group
  • Supporting the evaluation of external licensing opportunities
  • Working with Research and Clinical Development projects teams to support therapeutic goals
  • Independently managing external collaborations with academic and industry partners
  • Designing and guiding the execution of decisional experiments
  • Contributing to scientific literature and conferences through publication and presentation of results

  • Ph.D. degree with 7+ years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in microbiology including in vitro microbiologic profiling studies, resistance studies, time-kill assays, checkerboard assays to investigate synergy and antagonism, activity against biofilms, post-antibiotic effect and experience in target identification and validation
  • Broad and in-depth understanding of drug discovery and early stage development
  • Demonstrated capability for scientific, creative and strategic thinking, championing ideas for positions, and ability to present scientific data and concepts effectively.
  • Experience leading and managing scientists as a team or cross functionally with strong organizational skills
  • Proven capability of working in cross-functional R&D teams; proven project leadership in drug discovery programs
  • Experience in authoring regulatory submissions
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills with the proven ability to work in a matrix-team environment and the ability to lead internal and external preclinical activities.
  • Ability to work at the South San Francisco location and to travel approximately 10%, both domestic and international.
