Job Description

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Matrix manager of the Plant EHS Managers and Environmental Health & Safety Specialist and provide input on administrative duties such as: performance reviews, personnel actions, and allocation of responsibilities and resources in collaboration with Plant Manager.
  • Interprets, implements, applies and enforces codes and regulatory requirements set by local, state/provincial, federal and corporate policy to all applicable environmental regulations/laws for all regional operations/locations.
  • Ensures completion of reports for permits, licensing and notifications in accordance with local, state and federal standards.
  • Develops, implements, enhances and audits new and existing policies and procedures pertaining to environmental compliance.
  • Prepares required environmental documentation, including Environmental Assessments, Environmental Impact Statements, fact sheets, etc., for company capital projects
  • Directs work of specialty consultants - participates in selection process, develops scopes of work, schedules and budgets; reviews and monitors technical reports and billing statements
  • Evaluates, develops and supports all required environmental training.
  • Coordinates resources and provides technical support for the investigation and reporting of chemical releases and spills as required.
  • Generates performance metrics for environmental activities to provide process control.
  • Monitors progress on audit corrective actions and provides status reports to North America Leadership Team.
  • Oversees activities performed by site Environmental, Health and Safety managers to ensure compliance efforts are completed for:
  • Waste management under Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations including solid waste, hazardous waste, universal waste and medical waste
  • Air emissions management as required under the Clean Air Act (CAA) and reporting for Greenhouse Gases
  • Wastewater discharge management as required by National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)
  • Stormwater management required by the Clean Water Act (CAA) including inspections, reporting and Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP)
  • Drinking water management including inspections and reporting required under the Clean Water Act (CWA).
  • Hazardous chemical reporting under the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) and the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) including Tier 2 and TRI annual reports
  • Oil and used oil management including Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure Plans (SPCC)
  • Assistance with Sustainability Initiatives
  • Leads pollution reduction team and activities undertaken by the site.
  • Leads the development of strategic plans for environmental compliance and works to implement those at all locations.
  • Provides assistance during state and federal environmental agencies inspections.
  • Interprets legal documents and provides guidance to meet legal requirements, interfacing with legal as appropriate.
  • Administrates the response to environmental regulatory authorities when the company is required to provide such communication. Seeks and integrates direction from legal in such matters.
  • Oversight and responsibility for the Environmental Collaboration space content (e.g. Share Point)
SCOPE AND IMPACT

Coordinates environmental planning work within Operations & Engineering and with other organizational units such as: Government Affairs, legal and production planning. Assists with Environmental Compliance training and exchanges of information dealing with sensitive or controversial matters on a frequent and recurring basis. Position acts as liaison and technical coordinator between the Company and jurisdictional federal, state/provincial and local agencies.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Environmental Engineering (or similar).
  • Environmental professional certification preferred: Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 7 to 10 years in positions with direct responsibility for regulatory compliance related to air, water, and soil and waste disposal at manufacturing facilities. Emphasis on experience with Clean Air Act Title V permitted sites.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of environmental regulations and successful implementation through hands on activities.
  • Demonstrated high level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with site/regional leadership and site environmental professionals as a business partner.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish credibility with leadership and colleagues.
  • Ability to prioritize work with limited direction from supervisor.
  • Proficiency in written and oral communications skills.
  • Ability to creatively resolve problems and identify solutions through collaboration when required.
  • Interface and negotiate with outside agencies as required.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, plan and work independently.
  • Computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office software.
  • Prior experience supervising a team of professional employees.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the NA Environmental Manager. They will serves as a matrix manager for the Plant Environmental Health and Safety Managers and Environmental Health & Safety Specialists.

Travel Requirements

Up to 50% travel, typically to the manufacturing facilities in Canada and the United States.
