Fish Production Scientist 1

JOB SUMMARY:This position requires a highly motivated entry level biologist to work under general supervision as well as independently and on a team to accomplish all aspects of fish culture and a variety of operational and maintenance work related to the water treatment systems, equipment and infrastructure for two fish hatcheries.MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assist the Fish Production Scientists II, III and the Fish Production Assistant Director.2. Assist and participate in all aspects fish culture activities to include the following:
a) Handle salmonid brood stock including trapping, sorting, maturation assessment and condition, collecting research/pathology samples, and measuring spawning success.
b) Set-up incubation and rearing areas with appropriate equipment, plan movement of eggs from spawning to incubation. Plan movement of fry and fingerlings throughout rearing to release.
c) Provide and maintain daily water quality and flow logs.
d) Maintain hygienic conditions for the salmon, move and handle fish to optimize growth conditions.
e) Accurately tune feeding practices using appropriate diets, monitor fish growth and development.
f) Observe fish for stress diseases and/or parasites, and treat fish as prescribed by Veterinarian.
g) Inventory and coordinate tagging and marking for release of fish as determined by approved production plans, HGMP and the Salmonid Disease Control Policy.
h) Help with water system management. Respond to alarms. Monitor and ensure that water resources are used efficiently and that regular maintenance is performed on all operation components.3. Maintain the collection of daily records and input those records into the hatchery database. Keep daily hatchery logs.4. Ensure that biosecurity protocols are followed daily such as net, tank and equipment disinfection.5. Assist with monitoring plant operations.6. Help to maintain water flows, intake, distribution and discharge structures and the operation of filtration systems.7. Help to maintain inspection and service logs for components of water treatment equipment, controls, circulation pumps, oxygen systems, filtration and UV treatment systems.8. Assist with researching service and repairs and prepares work orders.9. Collect water samples for analysis by in-house or contract laboratories and conducts various testing of water quality as needed.10. Maintain water quantity withdrawal records and document rates as needed and maintain log of hatchery flow changes.11. Participate in facility design and construction.12. Serve as a fish culture resource to staff and others.13. Foster the Tribe's commitment to community services and the well-being of its members by participating in cultural events and engaging hatchery staff.EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION:Required:
Bachelor's degree in Fisheries Biology, Fisheries Science, or directly related field from an accredited college or university with at least 34 upper level semester hours (51 quarter hours) in aquatic biology subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fisheries biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, ecology, genetics, or aquaculture. In addition to these required courses, additional course work must include technical writing, and upper level probability and statistics.

• Communication, both written and verbal.

• Basic carpentry and plumbing.
• Trouble shooting and repairing small motors and pumps.
• Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office suite, data entry and analysis using Excel.

• Hallmark signs of fish stress and fish health management.
• Anadromous Pacific salmonid biology, culture, nutrition and physiology.
• Management of water quality and quantity.

• Good leadership and mentoring skills.

Ability to:

• Be willing to work evenings, weekends and holidays and provide 24 hour on-call support as situations arise with regard to the health and safety of the staff and fish.
• Work outside in inclement weather conditions.

• Maintain confidentiality.
• Must be able to work in close quarters with staff, organizing time to complete duties and solve problems.
• Translate technical information into clear communication for non-technical staff.
• Develop and conduct biological studies, analyze, evaluate, organize and effectively present orally and write reports.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:The working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this class. Work is performed outdoors and in an office setting. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear; and occasionally climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 60 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in the office, and moderate to loud in the field.Licenses or Certifications Required: Current and valid Washington State driver's license and First Aid/CPR/AED certification required.
