Veterinarian Technician - Casual Seasonal
The experienced zoo veterinary technician will provide veterinary care and laboratory services to our animal collection here at Disney working to ensure the highest quality of clinical support. The main focus of services will be at Seas with Nemo & Friends but there may be opportunities at Disney's Animal Kingdom. We are a busy, hi-energy, team-oriented practice. This position is a CT a casual seasonal role (no guarantee of hours each week) reporting directly to the Aquatic Animal Health Manager.
Responsibilities :
* Assist veterinarians during medical procedures including set up and use of equipment.
* Familiar with the set-up, use and care of equipment and instruments for medical procedures, (this includes but is not limited to ultrasound equipment, endoscopic equipment, ECG, dental equipment as well as video monitoring and recording equipment).
* Anesthesia (including equipment set-up/use, water re-circulating systems, intubation, monitoring, catheter placement, etc.).
* Formulate, prepare and dispense medication as ordered by staff veterinarian.
* Proficient at administering treatment to animals and the ability to adapt these skills to a variety of exotic species.
* Provide intensive and critical care including emergency procedures and triage of patients.
* Proficient in the proper collection, handling and processing of blood and other diagnostic samples from fish, marine mammals, reptiles, and invertebrates with the ability to adapt these skills to a variety of exotic species.
* Proficient in clinical laboratory procedures. This includes but is not limited to use of chemical analyzers; manual CBC techniques including differential analysis on fish, marine mammals, reptiles, and invertebrates; perform cytology and parasitology; processing samples to ship to outside labs.
* Perform radiography using DR and CR technology. Able and willing to learn the operation of our Vimago and Pegaso CT machines.
* Work with aquarist/keeper staff on behavior training of animals for medical procedures.
* Familiar with computerized medical record keeping and the ability to become proficient in ZooMR (Zoological Medicine Record Program) and ZIMS (Zoo Information Management System).
* Participate in educational presentations to our guests and on a regular basis.
* Ensure that hospital facility is "show ready" and in regulatory compliance.
* Participate in team projects and actively participate in accomplishing goals set by the Animal Health Department and the Aquatic Animal Health Manager.
Basic Qualifications :
* Certified, Registered or Licensed technician
* Minimum of 3 years clinical experience in a zoo or exotic practice working with non-domestic species.
* Familiarity with basic windows programs.
* Ability to work well in a team setting.
* Organizational skills.
* Inter-personal skills.
Preferred Qualifications :
* Experience with interacting with public and good public speaking skills.
Required Education :
* Graduation from an accredited veterinary technology school. Minimum 2 year program.
* Certified as a veterinary technician in at least one state with the ability to become certified in Florida within 1 year.
Preferred Education :
* Bachelor's Degree
