Job DescriptionGeneral Summary:Vertex is building out a Discovery Biology group focused on fundamental human biology, pushing the frontiers of stem cell biology to enable curative cell therapies in multiple disease areas. The Discovery Biology Senior Research Associate delivers reliably and responsibly on research initiatives including the development of human stem cell models and assays to evaluate targets and lead molecules for Vertex diseases. Applies technical proficiency and attention to detail skills in "troubleshooting", and ability to interpret changes in methodological design. Works with supervisor in setting the objectives of initiatives but may have responsibility for some experimental design.Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Executes, and interprets cell and molecular biology experiments, with a high degree of reliability
- Executes experiments using skills such as: tissue culture, PCR, gel electrophoresis, FACS, Immunohistochemistry,
- Leverages technical experience to help prioritize studies, based on project impact
- Performs basic statistical analysis of experimental data, where appropriate
- Conducts own experimental troubleshooting on routine problems
- Assists with publication and patent submission processes
- Prepares lucid protocols and written study reports
- Surveys relevant scientific literature to maintain awareness of issues and trends within the field
- Present studies effectively at internal Group/Department or Project Team research meetings
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Masters Degree (or equivalent degree) in biological sciences and 0-2 years of relevant employment experience or
- Bachelors Degree (or equivalent degree) in biological sciences and 4+ years of relevant employment experience
- Proven technical proficiency and demonstrated skill in conducting and interpreting experiments including the development of human stem cell models and assays to evaluate targets and lead molecules for Vertex diseases.
- Displays high level of scientific curiosity and ambitious in offering up cutting-edge ideas
- Hands on experience with cellular and molecular assays, including but not limited to: gel electrophoresis, PCR, FACs, and immunohistochemistry
- Experience with genetic modification or genetic engineering is a plus
- Uses technical knowledge to design and execute follow-up experiments
- Demonstrated understanding of analysis and interpretation of experimental data with proficiency in problem solving and protocol refinement
- Often deployed to investigations with more significant consequences and need for reliability
- Effective communicator (written and verbal), especially within their technical area(s)
