Job DescriptionGeneral Summary:Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking for a highly motivated and talented scientist with strong experience in cell biology and electrophysiology to join our Research team located in Boston, MA for drug discovery. The Cell Biology and Electrophysiology Senior Research Scientist is responsible for experimental productivity and emerging creativity and versatility. The Senior Research Scientist designs and executes experiments for major research projects in the relevant areas of disease biology using patient-relevant cellular models and appropriate readouts of the disease or target mechanisms under investigation. The ideal candidate will be responsible to develop, perform, and analyze functional electrophysiology and imaging assays by working collaboratively across cross-functional teams, be part of a fast-paced drug discovery team and communicate effectively through verbal and written communication. The successful applicant will participate in efforts to develop cell based functional assays to model human disease for target validation, proof-of-concept and mechanism of action experiments.Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develops complex primary human assays for target validation, proof of concept and mechanism of action studies.
- Designs, performs, analyzes and critically interprets in vitro patch-clamp recordings.
- Establishes alternative functional assays using various techniques including imaging, immunohistochemistry, etc.
- Establishes and maintains cultures of patient-relevant cellular models.
- Maintains excellent written documentation (e.g electronic notebook).
- Distills complicated, multidimensional data to clear hypotheses and new experimental directions
- Presents data to research teams and site leadership in a clear and compelling manner.
- Is up to date with relevant scientific literature broadly beyond own discipline/field
- Ability to design and execute more challenging experiments, including target identification, validation, and mechanistic investigation in disease-relevant contexts. A broad working knowledge of fundamental biology principles.
- Strong technical background in in vitro patch clamp recordings is required.
- Strong knowledge with ion channel structure function.
- Experience with cell culture and/or ex vivo mouse tissue preparations is required.
- Maintains a broad knowledge of relevant science beyond own discrete field(s)
- Communicates effectively in verbal presentations and in writing technical reports
- Displays great ability to work in a highly-collaborative team environment.
- Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in cell biology, cellular physiology and biophysics, neuroscience or related disciplines and 2-5 years of relevant post-doctoral employment experience, or
- Masters Degree (or equivalent degree) in cell biology, cellular physiology and biophysics, neuroscience , or related disciplines and 5+ years of relevant employment experience, or
- Bachelors Degree (or equivalent degree) in cell biology, cellular physiology and biophysics, neuroscience , or related disciplines and 8+ years of relevant employment experience
