Job Title: Engagement Specialist - Part-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

A science background is not required. A positive, outgoing, engaging attitude and passion for learning are!

SUMMARY:

The Engagement Specialist delivers the mission of Arizona Science Center: To inspire, educate, and engage curious minds through science. With the informal learning team, the Program Specialist provides exemplary STEM engagement both inside the museum and outside, with organizations across the state.

The Engagement Specialist will prepare, lead, and facilitate STEM activities, demonstrations, programs, and camps. This includes setting up classroom activities, educating students of various ages with hands-on lessons, and exploring fun science concepts. The Program Specialist may travel to different sites with our outreach program, and communicate and collaborate with team members, parents, and teachers, both in-person and virtually.

Within the Arizona Science Center, the Engagement Specialist will provide museum and exhibit interpretation, facilitate activities and shows for guests of all ages, learn new content for traveling exhibitions, and provide animal husbandry for Arizona Science Center's small invertebrate collection.

Overall, the Engagement Specialist offers inclusive and exciting STEM experiences by serving as an outgoing, friendly, and engaging team member with Arizona Science Center.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Floor and Guest Engagement

• Lead and facilitate fun, engaging STEM activities and demonstrations for guests and families of all ages

• Provide customer service and build positive relationships with guests

• Provide exhibit related educational programming and explore with guests on exhibits inside the Science Center

• Conduct basic animal husbandry for our small collection of invertebrates

• Set up and clean experiments, labs, demonstrations, and activities

Outreach and Education

• Prepare, present, and facilitate hands-on STEM activities for students in camps, after school programs, and both virtual and in-person outreach programs

• Educate students PreK-12 with grade-level appropriate content

• Set up classrooms for activities, and clean and prepare materials for programs

• Communicate with teachers and parents before, during, and after programs

Overall Duties

• Supervise activities and experiments to ensure safe and enjoyable experiences

• Sort supplies and maintain upkeep of materials and exhibits

• Provide excellent communication with team members and collaborate on projects and programs

• Research and develop inquiry-based activities for the floor, camps, and clubs

• Assist Arizona Science Center team members in delivering the mission of the center

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position has no managerial, supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform in this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty. The requirements below are a representative combination of various knowledge, skills, and abilities that would enable an individual to be qualified for this position.

Education, Experience, or Excitement to learn the following:

• A science, education, and museum background is preferred but not required

• Experience engaging people in interactive, and hands-on learning experiences

• Experience working in an educational setting with a variety of audiences

• Experience with virtual learning

• Experience in planning and coordinating activities

Skills you have or have a strong desire to improve upon:

• Skill in effective verbal and written communication and reporting

• Skill and knowledge in adapting content and complexity to ages and interests of program participants

• Problem solving and critical thinking skills

• Ability to present effectively to diverse audiences

• Skills in public speaking

• Ability to manage and engage large and small groups

• Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include weekends and evenings

Educational System Knowledge, helpful but not required:

• Knowledge of technology applications and integration in K - 12 grades

• Knowledge of youth development concepts and strategies

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public. Ability to engage in basic public speaking and talk with guests of all ages.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a wide variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to assess the validity of science-based facts and inquire with the scientific method.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, run and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to handle, feel, to reach with hands and arms. This position may require a lot of standing and walking through the museum and at offsite programs. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 30 pounds. This job's specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

This job also requires the use of a computer which will be placed somewhere in the employee's workspace. The employee must have the necessary keyboard and computer mouse skills and read a color monitor.
