Job Summary

Performs organizational work relating to environmental protection programs. Creates, implements, and manages programs to protect or improve environmental quality and ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations, as well as appropriate regulatory bodies such as EPA, DEC, ISO, and other relevant regulatory bodies.

Responsibilities

As assigned by the Plant Manager, acts as Environmental Management Representative (EMR) as it applies to the Environmental Management System for the site in accordance with ISO14001. The EMR is responsible for maintaining and continuous improvement of the environmental management system as well as maintaining overall site compliance with ISO14001 and other applicable ISO standards as defined by management. The EMR is authorized and expected to communicate and report directly to the plant manager all associated and relevant items. Responsibilities of the environmental management representative may include but are not limited to:
  • Responsible for the overall management and development of the Environmental Management System (EMS) and its supporting programs to assess environmental aspects and reduce the environmental impacts of the site/Production Unit, including all environmental media-air, land, and water as well sustainability.
  • Monitors, review and assess the progress of EMS program development and coordinates activities cross-functionally to improve site environmental performance.
  • Serves as the EMS technical expert to the site and provides input for maintaining the organization sustainability initiatives
  • Provides guidance to EMS teams/sub-teams and project/task owners in the application of strategies for risk avoidance and identifies cost saving opportunities.
  • Responsible for the effective administration of all Environmentally based programs/initiatives/projects/tasks, including budget preparation and administration; preparation of regulatory and internal reports; site environmental performance improvement, issue/violation identification and resolution, and work prioritization/task delegation, as well as other pertinent items deemed appropriate by company management.
  • Coordinates regulatory compliance effort to ensure environmental procedures and permit applications and renewals are budgeted for, prepared, and submitted to regulatory agencies on a timely basis, including annual reports to NYSDEC/USEPA, as well as local/state/federal municipalities and regulatory bodies as applicable and as they pertain to Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) operations, Hazardous Waste Plans/Contingency Plan, and Pollution Prevention Plans.
  • Administers and maintains the records for the Universal Hazardous Waste Manifest inventory for hazardous and non-hazardous regulated medical and biohazard wastes.
  • Manages all hazardous, non-hazardous, biohazard and universal waste including the accumulation, storage, manifesting, arrangements for transport and performs cost analysis of associated disposal.
  • Enforces environmental regulations and supports management during regulatory inspections and internal/external audits.
  • May conduct internal inspection and/or audits in accordance with company guidance and standard operating procedure.
  • Initiates and drives Corrective Actions and Preventive Actions (CAPA) identified during internal/external audits.
  • Prepares and maintains documentation associated with CAPAs to resolve findings for environmental matters during internal / external audits
  • Ensures that contractor personnel working on company property are in compliance with Company global, regional, and local environmental policies, directives, procedures, laws, best practices and other requirements as required.
  • Provides guidance, training, assistance and auditing of first line management and supervision to ensure that effective environmental measures are being implemented, working properly, and are in compliance with company and appropriate guidelines and policies.
  • May act as the main liaison between company management and other key stakeholders in matters of environmental affairs.
  • Works with emergency response team to address, and investigate, environmental incidents and ensure timely implementation of identified CAPAs if/when required.
  • Creates and presents metrics based reports to site, regional, global management teams as required.
  • Performs additional tasks/projects as deemed necessary by management.
  • Acts as regional subject matter expert in support of relevant items at all North American sites.
  • May travel up to 10% of total time worked, as required.
  • May supervise 1-3 direct reports.

  • REQUIREMENTS
  • Masters degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences/Studies, Biology, or related environmental/natural resources science related field
  • Minimum 10 years relevant work experience.
  • Must have a working knowledge of ISO 14001, NYSDEC/EPA and other relevant natural resource regulations such as Clean Air Act/Clean Water Act
  • Must have good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite of programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Office).
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills, good documentation skills, good organizational skills and good interpersonal skills.
