Position Overview

The VP/Executive Director, Head of Biology will be fully accountable for, and direct and oversee, the quality and performance of all in vitro and in vivo Biology, reporting directly to the CSO.

This individual will lead the Biology function with the expectation to ensure quality & drive innovation in the designs of all Biology studies and execution focus in line with corporate goals and be responsible for regulatory documentations/interactions in this core functional area.

Core Duties and Responsibilities, including but not limited to:
  • Lead the scientific, technical, and operational oversight of Biology, staff and studies across drug discovery and development programs.
  • As Head of the Biology department, directly manage internal staff and external consultants, as needed, across research and clinical development programs and drive mechanism of action understanding and/or proof of preclinical efficacy, through well thought out collaborations and/or innovative SMART study designs.
  • Directly accountable for authoring and approving relevant regulatory documentation including relevant Primary Pharmacodynamic sections of INDs, IBs, and others.
  • Lead the resolution of highly complex scientific problems through conveying the robustness of datasets and designs to enable strong collective scientific judgment across broad research and development.


Essential Skills and Traits:
  • Demonstrated track record in the Leadership of drug discovery and early development efforts, including the development and incorporation of appropriate cellular, molecular and in vivo assays.
  • Expert knowledge of neurodegenerative disease mechanisms and drug development opportunities and challenges in neurological drug development with a strong understanding and application of a translational mindset.
  • Expertise in managing CROs & consultants, timelines and budgets.
  • Excellent articulate, oral and written communication skills, the ability to lead and influence work in a highly collaborative work environment.
  • In conjunction with the CSO, provide strong scientific leadership for the company and function as a key company liaison with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead collaborations with partners to ensure optimization of strategy and pipeline.
  • Incorporate clinical concepts during the pre-clinical process to develop clinical biomarkers and enable integrated and seamless pre-clinical and clinical development activities.


Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in an appropriate Neuroscience field (eg. Pharmacology, Molecular Biology or alike) with 10+ years of experience in the biotech/pharmaceutical discovery and development industry.
  • Established thought leader and internationally recognized for his/her scientific contributions to drug development.
  • Track record of successfully enabling therapeutics to move through the drug development cycle through innovation and rigor in the progression and evidence base of novel mechanism of action understanding.
  • Demonstrated senior leadership skills to build/enhance the effectiveness of the organization in close working with Executive Management.
  • Highest degree of rigor and innovation/creative thinking resulting in key high quality data driven decision making.
