Anchored in the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute and the Office of the Dean of Research, the new Knight Initiative in Brain Resilience is a cross-disciplinary scientific endeavor aimed at addressing neurodegeneration, aging and brain resilience. The Associate Director will have a direct report to the faculty Director of the Knight Initiative for Brain Resilience and a dotted line/indirect report to the Executive Director of the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute.

Diseases and associated issues of cognitive decline like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, dementia, and related ailments are increasing with our rapidly aging global population. Stanford seeks to advance a new era of brain science focused on accelerating the fundamental understanding of the aging brain, both the biological causes of neurodegeneration and how to increase brain resilience throughout the lifespan. This will require a concerted effort to unite expertise and perspectives across disciplines (from chemistry and neurology to engineering), to question long-standing assumptions about the causes of neurodegeneration and to explore new creative approaches to understanding brain resilience and treating cognitive decline.

The initiative will take advantage of Stanford's fluid boundaries among departments and schools, incentivizing robust team research activities and building a campus-wide community focused on brain resilience and neurodegeneration. Initiative leaders will also seek to build meaningful teamwork with pioneering faculty at other institutions. Key to this endeavor is expanding the entrepreneurial, team-oriented community in the neurosciences - both by engaging researchers, scientists, and physicians across campus as well as recruiting outstanding junior faculty.
