POSITION SUMMARY

Oversees the day-to-day operational support of JJC's Biology Laboratories. Assists with hiring and evaluating; performs training and scheduling; supports Natural Science staff and student workers at Main and Romeoville Campuses. Performs lab tech duties and lab preparation; monitors and maintains supplies and equipment. Complies with procedures and policies to ensure the safety and security of laboratories and hazardous materials. Supervises the care and maintenance of biology animals, plants and aquariums; maintains cadavers and stock cultures of microorganisms. Position requires flexibility in scheduling; some evenings, weekends and holiday hours may be necessary to meet the needs of the department. Ability to travel between campuses and to procure supplies is required.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Prepare or supervise laboratory setups for all biology labs according to the lab schedule. Coordinate lab schedules with full time faculty.

2. Delegate work, train, and schedule work assignments and annual leave time for lab technicians and student workers and maintain time sheets. Coordinate operations with Romeoville campus staff. Assist the department chairperson withannual appraisals for biology lab techs.

3. Maintain and update preparation documents for all biology lab courses. Provide documents to all lab staff that are preparing lab setups.

4. Monitor and report biology budget expenditures, purchase supplies and equipment, solicit and select bids as required.

5. Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment for biology courses; order all supplies for the Main and Romeoville campuses.

6. Design and improve laboratory graphics and displays.

7. Assist faculty with implementation of new procedures and lab exercises, in accordance with the Natural Science Chemical Hygiene Plan. Participate on NS Safety Committee and CHP reviews and updates.

8. Ensure the safety and security of biology lab areas. Ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals and bio-hazard waste. Ensure staff compliance with required personal protective equipment policies. Maintain chemical storage and SDS records in accordance with chemical hygiene plan. Obtain required safety training and updates as needed.

9. Supervise the care and feeding of all biology laboratory animals, aquariums and plants. Maintain Biological Sciences Standard Operating Procedures for JJC Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Maintain stock cultures of microorganisms.

10. Procure and return cadavers, in accordance with JJC cadaver protocols and cadaver vendor agreements. Keep records for all cadavers acquisitioned & returned and all staff maintenance performed. Supervise staff maintenance of cadavers and ensure that all policies and procedures are executed.

11. Contact service representatives for maintenance of biology equipment and/or the facility, both internal and external. Submit work orders to JJC Facility Services, as needed. Coordinate special projects, renovations and room utilization with JJC Facility Services and/or Preventive Maintenance Agreements with vendors.

12. Assist faculty with issues concerning audiovisual equipment and computers. Contact Media Services and Information Technology (IT). Assist faculty with Vernier technology and equipment issues.

13. Assist faculty and supervise Natural Science Restoration Workdays. Provide faculty and volunteers with necessary equipment and supplies. Biannual workdays with FPDWC will require attending events on weekend.

14. Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Bachelor's degree in Biological Science. Must include course work in Chemistry and Microbiology.

2. Three (3) years related experience in a position of equivalent responsibility.

3. Ability to use computerized technology, laboratory equipment and apparatus.

4. Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

5. Attentiveness to detail, multitasking and initiative, with the ability to work accurately, efficiently and cooperatively with a diverse population.

6.Ability to work a flexible schedule; may include evenings and some weekends and/or work assignments at Main and Romeoville campuses.

7.Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Two (2) years of lab supervision.

2. Familiarity with both Mac and PC computers.

3. Experience in chemical handling, disposal and safety procedures.

3. Completed laboratory safety training.

4.English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency.
5.Demonstrated multicultural competence.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Normal lab/office physical demands.

Ability to travel between campus locations and to and from community events.

Some moderate lifting is required.

WORK SCHEDULE

Position requires flexibility in scheduling; some evenings, weekends and holiday hours may be necessary to meet the needs of the department.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Duties are performed indoors in the usual office and/or outdoor environment.
