Position: Environmental Health Scientist - Associate Consultant (Entry Level Position)

RHP is an environmental consulting firm with a focus on the field of Industrial Hygiene, Exposure Science, Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), Built Environment, Risk Management, Dose Estimation & Analysis, and Exposure Simulation Testing. We are seeking a full-time, post-degree, entry-level Associate to join our Chicago office as an Environmental Health Scientist. The ideal person for this role will have extraordinary attention to detail, excellent written and verbal communication skills, be able to meet and work with clients in a professional manner while possessing a strong aptitude for critical thinking and problem solving. Only individuals with a post-graduate degree (Masters or PhD) will be considered.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Gathering, analyzing, and reviewing data from multiple sources, including regulatory, laboratory, technical, legal and historical documents.
  • Consolidating critical information into comprehensive and cohesive deliverables, reviewing discovery documentation, and highlighting key points.
  • Performing historical and scientific research under the guidance of a Manager.
  • Assisting with deliverable drafting and document production.
  • Communicating with clients via mail, phone and email at the request of a Manager.
  • Performing field projects at client sites under the direction of a Manager. This could include:
  • Conducting industrial hygiene exposure assessment projects for regulatory compliance purposes (e.g. dusts, gases, vapors, and other potentially toxic materials), conducting noise dosimetry, collecting water/soil/air samples for third-party laboratory analysis, performing respirator fit testing.
  • Investigating adequacy of ventilation, exhaust equipment, lighting, and other conditions that may affect occupant health, comfort, or efficiency.
  • Inspecting and evaluating work operations and processes to determine potential contaminant emission sources or related health hazards associated with workplace conditions.
  • Conducting investigations of working conditions in places of employment for the prevention of occupational disease and industrial health hazards, with specific reference to toxins, noise, or harmful physical agents.
  • Measuring airborne concentrations of dust, gases and mists using air sampling tools and collections devices.
  • Collecting samples of work materials to detect and evaluate occupant exposure to toxic substances.
  • Assisting with studies at RHP's Exposure Sciences Laboratory to evaluate human inhalation and/or dermal exposures associated with present-day consumer products or historical work practices for purposes of regulatory compliance, litigation support, risk management, or product stewardship.
Maintaining field sampling equipment.Assisting in drafting proposals and reports for Manager review and finalization.Delivering/transporting material samples to Chicago area laboratories.

Required Skills/Experience/Certification:

This is an entry level position for individuals with post-graduate degrees. Do not apply if you do not have the following. The candidate must have the following experience/skills:
  • Post-graduate degree (e.g. Master or PhD) in a related field of health sciences, such as industrial hygiene, public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, toxicology, environmental sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, math, or similar.
  • Excellent technical writing skills. An ability to consolidate complex technical information into concise points and effectively communicate findings to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate effectively with clients.
  • Computer competency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel).
  • Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle.

Desirable Skills/Experience:

The right candidate may also have the following:
  • Prior environmental consulting work or internship experience.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis software tools (e.g. SPSS, R, JMP, CrystalBall) or mathematic modeling programs for estimating inhalation or dermal exposures.

Work Hours:

Primarily Monday through Friday, 40+ hours per week, though occasional weekend hours may be required based upon client/project demands. Timing of daily office hours are flexible with the office typically open from 6 a.m. - 6 p.m.
