Job Description:
The Campus Counselor will provide general academic, transfer, and career counseling to students through individual appointments and walk-in or virtual interactions. The Campus Counselor will be assigned one or more special areas of focus such as academic success, Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT), transfer, etc. The Campus Counselor will be the lead person on campus for educating students, faculty members and staff on issues related to their specialty roles.

Job Duties:

• Direct interactions, relationship building, case management, program development and leadership in support of students who arrive at NOVA and are in need of holistic social, emotional and academic support.
• Maintain a student caseload of approximately 300 students.
• Teach Student Development (SDV) College Success Skills classes, a total of 5 per year with an enrollment of 35-40 students in each section.
• Design and facilitate workshops for faculty members and students on a variety of topics including career and academic advising, academic success, wellness, working with distressed students and other topics.
• Collaborate with college faculty, staff, and administrators.
• Respond to students in distress and manage challenging academic cases.
• Participate on college task forces and committees.
• Manage assignments which relate to programming, direct service delivery to students, and student caseloads with regard to advising and outreach for academic life management concerns.
• Participate in regular professional development as required and/or relevant to the assigned work.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

Required KSA's:

• Knowledge of counseling and student development theories and best practices.
• Skill in providing academic, transfer, and personal counseling to adolescents and adults and an ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to provide ongoing support for academic life management and an understanding of case management.
• Ability to de-escalate high emotion situations and appropriately involve other college resources and supports.
• Understanding of case management.
• Ability to promote inclusive counseling sessions and a campus climate respectful of diversity and multiculturalism.
• Informed of current equity issues in community colleges.
• Ability to utilize interpersonal and problem-solving skills to collaborate and negotiate with students, faculty, staff, parents, members of the community and university representatives.
• Knowledge of relevant federal, state, VCCS, and college policies and regulations including the Family Education Rights Privacy Act (FERPA), Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), Title IX, and VAWA/SaVE, and Clery legislation.
• Ability to understand, disseminate, interpret and communicate College policies and regulations using approved and accepted processes and practices.
• Outstanding oral and written communication skills, to include the development of letters, memos, and course materials and the ability to present to large and small audiences.
• Ability to design, implement, and evaluate programs.
• Ability to collaborate on the development, assessment and reporting of student learning outcomes and other assessment measures.
• Ability to conduct responsibilities while demonstrating excellent customer service skills.
• Ability to pass criminal background check.
• Knowledge of, and skill in, computer usage including Microsoft Office, e-mail, student information systems, Adobe Acrobat Reader, social media and use of the Internet to complete research.
• Ability to understand and conceptualize data needs and utilize database systems to generate reports.
• Ability to occasionally travel to off-campus work sites such as other campuses, college sites, or local universities.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced academic advising environment.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner.
• Ability to work at least one evening per week and an occasional Saturday during peak registration periods.

Required Qualifications:

• Master's degree in Counseling or in a field appropriately related to the position. Qualifying degree must be awarded by a regionally accredited institution.
• One to two years of experience providing academic advising and counseling to college students or prospective college students.
• Experience working with, and making referrals for, adolescents and adults in distress and an awareness of mental health issues commonly facing college students.
• Experience researching a variety of community resources to holistically support students' or clients' needs.
• Teaching or workshop facilitation experience.
• Experience working with individuals in the areas of student academic life management or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

• Doctoral degree in Counseling.
• One to three years experience handling client or student case management.
• Experience providing multidisciplinary advising and counseling in a higher education setting.
• Experience teaching college success courses.
• Bilingual proficiency in a foreign language frequently spoken in Northern Virginia households.
• Experience utilizing PeopleSoft or other student information systems.
• Familiarity with student success initiatives.
• One to three years of experience working with faculty, students, parents and institutional staff to assure a comprehensive response to students in need of support.
