Job Description
Under the administration of the Associate Director, Molecular Pathology, the Biostatistician / Computational Biologist / Bioinformatics Specialist will contribute to the support of breast and colorectal cancer research by designing and analyzing statistically rigorous genomic and correlative science projects including next generation sequencing data.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Analyzes molecular, cellular and pathological data for the discovery of biomarkers and for the discovery of molecular pathways and processes associated with colon or breast cancer or response to therapeutic therapies.
  • Collaborates with research personnel in the Division of Pathology laboratory, the NSABP Biostatistical Center, and with outside investigators with access to the NSABP Biospecimen Bank
    to design and analyze genomics studies with meaningful clinical aims that demonstrate rigorous statistical justification.
  • Manages, normalizes and prepares molecular data for export to collaborators.
  • Performs pre-anonymization when needed. Writes necessary scripts such as Perl, R to provide satisfactory de-anonymization of pathology laboratory data such as CEL files.
  • Functions as a liaison between the Division of Pathology and NSABP Biostatistical Center at the University of Pittsburgh-which will provide academic and statistical oversight-to facilitate interaction between the two entities.
  • Collaborates with NSABP Laboratory molecular profiling personnel to analyze data generated from the Division of Pathology laboratory and all other correlative science projects conducted by the NSABP.
  • Participates in the planning of data organization and data storage for the NSABP Pathology Laboratory
  • Collaborates with NSABP translational scientist and NSABP clinical investigators for interpretation of the correlative science data and manuscript preparation.
  • Writes scientific papers to be published in peer-review journals.
  • Develops and presents papers and posters at meetings of professional organizations.


OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Complies with federally-mandated safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents in the workplace.
  • Maintains professional knowledge by reviewing professional publications, attending professional meetings, and establishing personal networks. Able to travel to offsite meetings as required.
  • Understands the policies, procedures, regulations, and practices necessary to conduct the normal function of this position. Ensures departmental procedures are documented and properly followed by staff.
  • Maintains confidentiality and performs duties in a responsible and ethical manner.
  • Performs additional duties as may be assigned.


EXPERIENCE/SKILLS
  • PhD or equivalent in Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or Systems Biology from a well-respected university.
  • Biostatistician with expertise in the analyses of genomics data, including those generated from gene expression arrays, sequencing, and genome-wide association studies.
  • Strong working knowledge of computers and computer programming skills including R, S+, and SAS.
  • Track record of peer-reviewed publications in related fields.
  • Ability to read and understand technical medical science literature and associated protocols.
  • Able to design, organize, analyze, and document project-related materials.
  • Demonstrates strong attention to detail with high level of accuracy; critical assessment to consistently improve and maintain a high level of quality.
  • Able to work and participate as a team member and develop productive relationships with co-workers and collaborators.
  • Coordinates and prioritizes tasks independently and completes in a timely manner.
  • Works independently to handle all aspects of the job, notifying supervisor(s) or appropriate personnel as needed.
  • Demonstrates sound written and verbal communication skills.
