Position Summary:

We are seeking an individual that reflects our institutional values, is a true team player, demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and is enthusiastic about STEM education.

This position collaborates with the Director of Education and Education Team, Director of Volunteer Engagement, and staff within other departments to achieve departmental and organizational goals. Program development, staff management and development, training experience, and budget management are all essential functions of this leadership role.

Role and Responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Education

  • Oversee all Education programs with direct responsibility for all aspects of Camp and Teacher Professional Development programs.
  • Direct summer and holiday camp programs. Responsibilities include preparing appropriate camp curriculum/activities, hiring and development of seasonal staff, program administration including budget management, and serving as the primary contact for the Camp program.
  • Develop CuriOdyssey's Teacher Professional Development programs, aligning with STEMCorps program goals.
  • Manage CuriOdyssey's School Programs, refining existing offerings and developing new programs and relationships with regional school districts and school sites.
  • Provide content, training and feedback to others facilitating an educational experience, such as volunteers, Wildlife staff, and other museum stakeholders, ensuring that the experience for the learner is consistent and in alignment with CuriOdyssey philosophy.
  • Develop new content and ensure relevancy of existing curriculum for a range of educational experiences that are rich, authentic, driven by the learner, with a cultural relevance and inclusivity lens.
  • Facilitating and engaging young learners in meaningful educational experiences on- and off-site, as needed, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Work collaboratively with the Education Scheduler and Liaison on school program and camp scheduling and registration and regular reporting.
  • Work with the Director of Education to achieve department goals including development of a year-round evaluation plan for all programs, crafting proposals and reports for fundraising efforts, department- and program-budget development, and staff management and professional development.


Desired Qualities
  • At least 5 years of experience in an education leadership role, preferably at an informal or cultural institution such as a zoo, museum, or interpretive center.
  • Program Development experience from design to evaluation, including budget management.
  • Hands-on inquiry and project-based content development for school-aged children, especially PreK-5th grade, and teacher professional development.
  • Demonstrated track record of staff management with a high degree of social and emotional competency.
  • The ideal teammate will have professional and/or lived experience with values of diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion, and embrace organizational aspirations to create a welcoming and affirming environment for all staff, volunteers and guests.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Science, Education, related field or equivalent experience
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to details
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Google Suite


About the Assistant Director of Education
  • This is an exempt, 40 hour/week position, with work hours/schedule based upon program season and departmental needs.
  • Occasional weekend/holiday scheduling for certain programs and/or events.
  • This position requires the following:
  • Take and clear a Live Scan background check.
  • Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination and Booster
  • Current Child/Adult First Aid/CPR/AED Certification or willingness to obtain

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

The physical demands herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential job functions.

Environment: Work is conducted at CuriOdyssey and immediately local space at Coyote Point. Programs will take place indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.

Mobility: Physical ability and endurance to occasionally carry and lift heavy materials, up to 50 pounds. Frequently move from a sitting to standing position. Traversing uneven surfaces, bending, reaching, sitting on the floor with children and twisting are daily repetitive physical actions.

Compensation and Benefits:

Salary: $74,000/year

This is a non-exempt full-time position with a desired start date in May 2022. The general work schedule varies according to program needs and is Mon. - Fri. 8:00am - 5:00pm for the duration of summer camp June-August but subject to shift, seasonally.
