Description

As a Scientist in the Sequencing group, you will investigate automated sample preparation and library preparation solutions for next-generation sequencing systems on Cepheid's GeneXpert system. The successful candidate will have familiarity with qPCR, molecular biology and 2nd/3rd generation sequencing platforms, as well as basic analysis concepts from these systems.

The Scientist will work cross-functionally with Engineering, R&D, and other groups in the development of these technologies, as well as with outside collaborators. In addition to technical qualifications, the ideal candidate will be self-motivated, inquisitive, organized, and able to thrive in the face of ambiguity.

Responsibilities
  • Independently devise strategies and experimental plans for development of new sample prep, library prep, and sequencing methods
  • Perform hands-on evaluation, testing, development, and troubleshooting of new sample prep, library prep, and sequencing methods
  • Work independently and as part of a team in a cross-disciplinary environment
  • Analyze data using Microsoft Excel, Minitab, R, or command line tools
  • Execute studies with limited guidance or direction
  • Establish prototype specifications for initial feasibility studies
  • Maintain detailed experimental records
  • Interpret business needs and give recommendations supporting business strategy and/or direction
  • Present at and participate in group meetings

Qualifications/Requirements
  • Doctoral degree in relevant field
  • In-depth knowledge of and experience with nucleic acid purification, PCR, and primer/probe design
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and solve complex problems
  • Ability to work in a BSL-2 laboratory environment
  • Ability to ask questions and check for clarity and understanding to solve complex problems
  • Excellent writing, communication, and organizational skills, including the ability to present to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Proficiency with standard Microsoft programs and statistical analysis with tools such as Microsoft Excel, Minitab, or R
  • Experience performing short-read (eg. Illumina) and long-read (eg. Oxford Nanopore) sequencing experiments and subsequent data analysis
  • Familiarity with data analysis in a Linux/Unix-like environment
  • Detail-oriented, proactive, innovative problem solver capable of overcoming challenges and complex issues in a fast-paced environment
