About PhAST. PhAST is a venture-backed AI healthcare startup developing computer vision technology for rapidly diagnosing antibiotic resistance. Our platform provides clinical decision support for doctors, workflow improvement for hospitals, and helps accelerate the drug development process for pharmaceutical companies. Company headquarters are located in the biotech innovation hub of Cambridge (USA), the data analysis team is based in Zurich, and a clinical validation team is based in Seoul. This opening is for a position in the Cambridge, MA headquarters.

Job Description. We are looking for an experienced, solution-oriented, business-driven Head of Biology to advance our R&D program and lead our biology team. Your role is to provide technical and strategic oversight to ensure high-quality execution of our experimental program and to actively collaborate with senior management in Data Science, Product Development, Clinical Studies and Regulatory Affairs. This role reports directly to the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO).

Responsibilities:
  • Oversee all internal and external R&D activities for our biology programs, across sites (Cambridge MA and Seoul, Korea).
  • Define R&D milestones, priorities and execution plan together with the CSO.
  • Implement and manage priorities and coordinate team member assignments to R&D tasks to optimally meet milestones.
  • Supervise staff in the biology and clinical teams, define development and analytical validation designs, review and approve validation protocols, study data, and reports generated by the team to ensure scientific validity and progress towards meeting regulatory requirements.
  • Interface with the data science team to ensure optimal alignment between data generation and model development.
  • Interface with the product development team by bringing detailed understanding of the scientific basis and operational workflow of PhAST's AI-enabled diagnostic technology.
  • Lead scientific collaborations with pharmaceutical companies, contract research organizations, and academic partners.
  • Coordinate the testing and validation program using patient samples from, or at collaborating US and international hospitals.
  • Ensure optimization and evolution of existing methods to meet Quality requirements and Operational effectiveness of Quality Control to meet the FDA regulatory requirements.
  • Lead or contribute to the preparation of federal grant applications and reports, scientific publications and regulatory submissions, and support patent filings.


Qualifications:
  • PhD in biological sciences, including cell biology, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology or biotechnology (or similar).
  • Expertise in antibiotic resistance and antibacterial drug development with at least five years of industry experience in the pharmaceutical or in vitro diagnostic industry.
  • Clinical microbiology experience a plus.
  • Demonstrated track record in providing leadership, strategic oversight and project management.

· Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills.

· Motivation to work in a fast-paced startup environment and to succeed as a team.

· Entrepreneurial mindset with a consistent "can do" attitude.

· Prior microscopy experience a plus.
