Background:
The Fisheries Behavioral Ecology Program of the RACE Division examines the functional responses of Alaska marine fishes to environmental, climate, and habitat conditions with laboratory experimentation and field collections. Experiments examine the responses of fish to temperature, pH, feeding conditions, habitat variation, and pollutants. Activities will include the
laboratory culture of larval, juvenile, and adult fishes and their prey. Experimental activities will include monitoring of experimental conditions, fish measurements, feeding, tank maintenance, record keeping, and synthesis of data summaries and syntheses. Duties will also standardized laboratory processing of biological samples such as dissections and lipid analysis.

This is a full time contract position in Newport, OR.

Duties Include:
  • Culturing larval fisher and their prey in an experimental setting.
  • Provide records of experimental conditions in culture tanks.
  • Collect biological data on samples from animals in
    experimental culture including body size metrics.
  • Preserve biological specimens for archiving and
    subsequent analysis.
  • Produce data summary tables and create metadata
    files based on laboratory experiments.
  • Perform statistical analysis of experimental data.
  • Prepare figures and tables of experimental data.
  • Contribute to writing assignments necessary for full
    reporting of laboratory experiments.

Additional required qualifications include:
  • Demonstrated experience in the culture of marine fishes or invertebrates.
  • Experience designing and constructing experimental seawater systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory experimentation related to the behavioral or physiological ecology of fishes.
  • Ability to produce data tables and summary statistics of laboratory and field data.
Additional preferred qualifications include:
  • Demonstrated experience in the culture of cold-water marine fish larvae in experimental setting.
  • Ability to perform statistical analysis of experimental data.
  • Ability to produce scientific writing that effectively summarizes experimental observations.
