Summary
The King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks (DNRP) seeks NextGen Climate Interns. Participants in this program will contribute to shaping their professional development in climate-associated career fields. Project-based interns will complete no less than two rotational assignments supporting the County's Strategic Climate Action Plan (SCAP), integrating climate change into all county operations, and working with King County cities, partners, communities, and residents. The SCAP outlines King County's priorities and commitments for climate action to residents and partners. These internships will be yearlong and will provide experience in the practical application of coursework and local government action in responding to climate change in a large-scale urban infrastructure system. Participants will have the opportunity to work on individual projects and a larger group project to shape the future structure of the NextGen climate internship program.
Job Duties
Examples of project focus areas for 2022 and beyond:Climate preparednessSupporting the development of internally focused Climate Change Digital Resource Hub for county employees Providing research support for funding mechanisms and options for climate preparedness actions Supporting the design and implementation of the urban heat measurement and mapping projectSustainable and Resilient Frontline CommunitiesSupport climate infographic communications projects with departments Assisting with meeting facilitation for community presentations & workshops Supporting the County's ongoing working relationship with Climate and Equity Community Task Force Research and compile climate justice resources for SRFC implementation Representing climate team at community coalition meetings and outreach events Supporting the work of the new interdepartmental Green Jobs Strategy development workgroup (Green Jobs Now)Reducing Greenhouse Gas EmissionsProject execution on water efficiency, including supporting or conducting cross-agency efforts to measure and reduce water usage Project execution on countywide energy programs, including supporting or conducting studies on energy efficiency and oil heat conversion Project execution on countywide transportation, including supporting or conducting efforts focused on reducing car trips.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
Experience:College level students currently enrolled and continuing into the fall of 2022 in full or part-time status at an accredited community college or four-year institution.Experience conducting informal and formal results-oriented research leading to focused deliverables Experience building relationships and working collaboratively with a range of stakeholder groups.Skills:Excellent oral and written communications skillsKnowledge of research methodsDemonstrated basic quantitative skillsDemonstrated analytical and problem-solving skillsSkilled in gathering, manipulating, and using data utilizing computer software and applicationsDemonstrated understanding and commitment to equity and social justice and uplifting community voices. Is sensitive to cultural norms, expectations, and ways of communicating.Working Conditions:Telecommuting Requirement The work associated with this position will be performed predominantly by telecommuting, with occasional onsite work and meetings, as influenced by business needs. Employee will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements. Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required by the department in alignment with the Public Health Directive from the Seattle & King County Public Health Officer.
