About Sunairio

As the world transitions to renewable energy, the global economy will become more dependent on weather than at any point since the Industrial Revolution. And due to climate change, the weather that our future economy is tied to will be drastically different from the weather we've historically experienced. This means that managing weather-based risk, and weather-based variability is the number #1 challenge facing the energy grid.

Sunairio's mission is to disrupt weather prediction as we know it to build the most advanced platform for valuing, managing, and operating renewable energy. Instead of relying on physics-based weather models that are bias-prone and slow, we use machine learning and advanced statistics to generate high-fidelity simulations of future weather risk-and we do this on multi-year timescales at hourly (or less) resolution. We work with renewable energy project developers, storage operators, energy buyers, energy suppliers, portfolio managers, traders, and utilities to deliver actionable insights into the hardest energy problems.

The founders of Sunairio have decades of experience building decision models to anticipate weather risk in energy markets, and we're now seeking exceptional, intrepid, and entrepreneurial-inclined people to form the core of our technical team. This core team will be responsible for laying the building blocks of a world-class back-end architecture and user interface that elevates Sunairio from a revolutionary algorithm to an industry-defining technology.

What we offer:
  • The opportunity to join an industry-disrupting startup on the ground floor-with significant equity compensation
  • The focus to work on innovative solutions to problems of critical importance
  • A truly collaborative team environment
  • The ability to help shape company culture
  • Amazing swag
  • Competitive salary

Key Responsibilities
  • The Senior Data Scientist for Meteorology will work closely with the engineering team and the CEO to maintain, validate, and update the core Sunairio weather simulation technology
  • Apply insights from atmospheric science to inform model development
  • Perform independent research into climate trends
  • Design and develop data visualizations that convey nuance and uncertainty in an actionable manner
  • Run hybrid machine learning/statistical models
  • Develop clear and succinct descriptions of modeling processes and outputs for use in business development and in customer applications
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to develop a world-class user experience

What we're looking for
  • Passion for building a new solution to weather prediction problems that applies machine learning and statistical methods instead of pure physics
  • 5+ years of experience in quantitative meteorology, numerical weather prediction, or climate research
  • Expertise with the leading short-range and medium-range NWP models (NAM, HRRR, GFS, ECMWF)
  • Expertise in climate reanalysis and regional & global climate modeling methods
  • Experience with stochastic modeling and time series forecasting
  • Experience with the Python scientific computing environment (Pandas/Numpy/SciPy/Xarray)
  • Advanced Degree (MS/PhD) in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Physics, or related field
  • A creative problem-solver with outstanding communication skills and a commitment to technical excellence
  • Intellectual curiosity
