Apply early Reporting to the Analytical Laboratory Supervisor, the Microbiologist 1 works in the COVID Response laboratory unit of the Microbiology Laboratory. This supports the agency's mission by participating in responding to the public health emergency for SARS-Cov-2, performing extractions and real-time PCR and Serology on clinical specimens for SARS-Cov-2 and other viral pathogens and providing logistical support of SARS-Cov-2 testing. This is a full-time project position within the Division of Disease Control and Health Statistics (DCHS), Public Health Laboratories, Microbiology and is currently funded through July 31, 2023. Duties Include * Performing sample prep of incoming specimens in accordance with institutional policies. * Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment. * Performing all routine tests as necessary to complete assigned duties. * Using the Laboratory Information System (Star LIMS) for accessioning of samples and releasing of releasing of results. * Operating autoclaves for laboratory waste. * Performing Laboratory Chemical Inventory and assuring proper labeling of all reagents & chemicals. * Cleaning, maintaining and disinfecting laboratory areas and equipment. * Performing specified quality assurance tests. * Performing analyses in accordance with institutional procedures. * Ensuring proper lab quality control systems are functioning properly. Required Qualifications * A Bachelor's degree in microbiology or a major in another biomedical laboratory science provided that at least 20 semester or 30 quarter credit hours in microbiology. * Experience applying knowledge of various microbiology disciplines to modern instrumentation. * Experience presenting technical information clearly, both orally and in writing. Desired Qualifications * Experience working in the following: * A public health laboratory. * Biosafety level 2 laboratories. * Automated real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assays, extraction platforms, and other high-throughput instrumentation.
