Job Description:

Leidos has an opening for a Marine Acoustician at John C. Stennis Space Center, in Mississippi. This is an exciting opportunity to use your experience to help the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) in their critical support to the U.S. Navy's Undersea Warfare programs.

MUST POSSESS ACTIVE SECRET CLEARANCE, with the ability to be granted a higher level clearance. Current Top Secret clearance is preferred.

The analyses and products developed by NAVOCEANO scientists provide Navy-standard and custom characterizations of acoustic effects which are essential to environmental modeling and acoustic performance predictions. We work with government physical scientists, technologists and oceanographers to discover, process and analyze marine geo-acoustic properties, underwater sound propagation and oceanographic parameters, develop specialized databases and build products used for fleet ocean forecasts/predictions and operations. NAVOCEANO is a significant operational component and storied foundation of the U.S. Navy Oceanography Program, with over 190 years of continuous support to America's Navy. You will be an important part of that legacy and the forward leaning organization of naval operational oceanography based at Stennis.

The Marine Acoustician will work as a senior level interdisciplinary scientist as part of a team embedded within the NAVOCEANO Acoustics Department. You will receive mission guidance and priorities from government Technical Points of Contact but will have considerable latitude in day-to-day activities involving the data discovery, preparation and analysis needed to develop and update acoustic databases and special products. Mastery of physical science theories, principles, practices, and techniques is required, including skills in physics, geophysics, oceanography, mathematics, and statistics sufficient to solve new and difficult problems in underwater acoustics not susceptible to treatment by accepted methods.

Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Physics, Oceanography, Acoustics, Mathematics, or other relevant field and at least 2 years experience, or a Bachelor's degree and at least 4 years' related experience
  • Knowledge of underwater acoustics and sound propagation, including experience using underwater acoustic models to predict transmission loss and determine geo-acoustic properties
  • Experience in Matlab and/or Mathmatica programming and analysis techniques
  • Experience in scripting languages (python etc.) in Windows & LINUX environments
  • Experience working with geographic information systems, such as ESRI products
  • Experience researching/data-mining for acoustic data types
  • Experience integrating acoustic data into databases and/or products
  • Experience analyzing measured environmental and acoustic data, including transmission loss
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, along with excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Able to suggest solutions and implement as needed.

MUST POSSESS ACTIVE SECRET CLEARANCE, with the ability to be granted a higher level clearance. Current Top Secret clearance is preferred.
