The Department of Biology is seeking candidates with research programs focused on Ecology that will utilize local public- and privately-owned natural areas. This is a full-time, benefits eligible position with an anticipated start date of August 2022. The successful candidate will join a dynamic Biology Department with strengths in applied ecology, cellular and molecular biology, and discipline-based education research and will contribute to an interdisciplinary program in Environmental Studies. The Department of Biology faculty is comprised of 21 tenured- or tenure-track faculty and 8 full time instructors. The Department serves approximately 950 undergraduate majors and 25 MS graduate students. The new faculty member is expected to establish an active, externally-supported research program that includes a focus on the ecology of natural areas in urban, suburban, or rural landscapes. The successful candidate will participate as a member of a growing research cluster focused on studies of the relationship between humans and the environment, using the UNO Preserves (https://www.unomaha.edu/college-of-arts-and-sciences/biology/nature-preserves/index.php) and their surroundings as a unifying focal area. Research topics related to urban ecology, conservation biology or incorporating landscape scale interactions of the biota on the preserve and its surrounding environments are of particular interest, though other areas of specialization will be considered. This position will serve a key role in maintaining the growth in both research and teaching that the Department of Biology has demonstrated in recent years. The successful candidate's expertise will complement existing research strengths focused on the pathogenesis of disease and on applied ecology and will facilitate research and teaching collaborations within the Department of Biology as well as with faculty in other UNO departments and at other campuses within the University of Nebraska system. Field-based facilities support research and teaching programs in the department; these include the 212-ha Glacier Creek prairie preserve that is located 30 minutes from campus, other sites in the Nature Preserve Consortium, as well other privately- and publicly-owned natural areas in the Omaha area (https://www.unomaha.edu/college-of-arts-and-sciences/biology/nature-preserves/index.php). In addition to dedicated research space and startup funds, the successful candidate will have access to shared research resources within the Department of Biology. These include access to our 1700 square foot greenhouse, animal facilities, research-grade microscopes, and to other shared lab equipment, including access to a microplate reader and a sequencing facility housing an Illumina NextSeq 550 and an iSeq 100. Access to high performance computing resources is available through the University of Nebraska's Holland Computing Center which includes Crane and Rhino clusters. Additional core facilities are housed at the University of Nebraska Medical Center located 15 minutes from UNO. The standard workload assignment in the Department of Biology is 25% research:75% teaching. The successful candidate will contribute to core courses in the undergraduate curriculum as part of a team of instructors teaching courses such as Introductory Biology or Ecology. The candidate will also develop courses for upper level undergraduates and graduate students. Mentorship of undergraduate and graduate student research is expected. The University has a strong commitment to achieving diversity among faculty and staff. The University of Nebraska does not discriminate based on race, color, ethnicity, national origin, sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, age, genetic information, veteran status, marital status, and/or political affiliation in its programs, activities, or employment. UNO is a VEVRAA Federal Contractor and an E-Verify employer.
