The Department of Occupational and Environmental Health in the School of Public Health at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a Research Associate. This position is responsible for planning and performing scientific research as well as designing and conducting experiments independently to examine the toxicological impact of occupational and/or environmental exposure using bioassay, biochemical, and molecular approaches. In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will: * Conduct in vitro and in vivo experiments with minimal to no supervision. * Display professional knowledge of the relevant scientific literature, keep a detailed notebook summarizing experiments and recording research data, maintain computer database of research data, communicate the results of scientific research through oral and poster presentations at scientific conferences, and prepare manuscripts for publication in scientific peer-reviewed journals. * Participate in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students and volunteer workers from diverse background in the lab, and facilitate ongoing research in the laboratory. * Contribute to research proposals for applications of new grants and funding. * Perform other duties as assigned by the PI including maintaining the functionality and operations of the PI's lab, following all safety rule, reporting accidents promptly, and correcting safety hazards identified in the workplace. * Assist with ordering and procurement of supplies and equipment and with general maintenance of laboratory. * Ph.D. degree in environmental health sciences, toxicology, or a related discipline OR an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience. * A minimum of two (2) years of training experience. * Graduate research experience (Ph.D. or equivalent) on bioassay development, molecular biology, and animal studies. * Strong molecular and cell biology skills including sequencing, different types of PCR, primer design, cell culture, transfections, Western blots, confocal microscopy, MTT assay etc. * Expertise in toxicology, environmental health, tumor biology, and molecular epidemiology research. * Animal handling skills and expertise in xenograft model systems in vivo. * Be able to perform bench work independently and extract genomics and proteomics data from human clinical samples. * Development and validation of new types of bioassays for analyses of animal tissue and human clinical samples. * Strong research background in environmental chemistry, toxicology, and pharmacology would be a great plus for this position. * Evidence of the above skills reflected in a productive number (>5 preferred) of the first or co-first author publications in peer-reviewed journals.
