Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Cleveland Metroparks - Cleveland, OH Education Assistant (Ambassador Animals) The Education Assistant assists in the development and deliverance of educational programs, activities, projects, and live shows for regular Zoo guests and school groups, promoting the conservation of the environment and the appreciation of wildlife. The Education Assistant is also responsible for the care and training of over 80 program animals, and educating the community about conservation through on-grounds live animal shows, tours, and various outreach opportunities off zoo grounds. Essential Functions: 1) Regular and predictable attendance is expected and required. All Cleveland Metroparks employees must be prepared to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as required. 2) Ensures animals are cared for: Check health status of all animals in the morning at arrival, and the evening before departure; cleans all animal food and water bowls; prepares animal diets and cleans diet containers; cleans animal enclosures; cleans all areas around animal enclosures; trains new staff and volunteers to complete animal care. 3) Provides animal training and enrichment: Provides animals with mental and physical stimulation with training, toys, exercise, and enclosure furniture; trains new innovative and natural behaviors that showcase the animals' natural abilities; trains animal husbandry behaviors to assist in their care; creates an animal enrichment schedule for education animals. 4) Participates in animal shows both on zoo grounds and in traveling school and events shows away from the zoo. 5) Maintains daily and monthly animal records: Makes notes of all animal activity in three education areas and submits to education and animal care managers; observes animals for any abnormal activity and reports to supervisors; creates monthly animal sign out sheets, and records animal use numbers; schedules snake feeding dates for all education snakes; records all animal diets, feedings, shedding, and defecation. 6) Assists in various other education programs including assisting with tours through education animal areas for other education programs as well as Zoo Society and Marketing. 7) Transports animals and supplies both onsite to shows and veterinarians and offsite to events. 8) Keeps direct supervisor promptly informed of key/significant issues or concerns. 9) Carries out duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner to maintain a safe work environment and surrounding area for oneself, co-workers and public. 10) Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action as capable and promptly notifying supervisory personnel. 11) Updates and enhances own knowledge by involvement in continuing education for professional growth (i.e., attends relevant conferences, seminars, in-service trainings, and certification programs) 12) Performs related duties as assigned or apparent. Work Schedule: Up to 28 hours per week. Flexible schedules needed, however, regular days identified as Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Shift times mirror park hours, however, most shifts will occur between 8:30am-5:00pm. Expected to work some nights, as well as weekends and holidays, as assigned. Filing Deadline: 01/24/2022 Experience Required * Associates Degree in biological sciences, zoology, or a related field required; supplemented by one year of experience in animal care and training, public speaking, or customer service; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. • CPR and First Aid certification and Blood Borne Pathogen certifications required, or ability to obtain certifications during course of employment. • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, including employees and the general public. • Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely and persuasively using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation with ability to communicate one-on-one or in group settings. • Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and organization. • Management skills and strong business acumen, including problem solving, vision, ability to manage multiple programs and meet deadlines, collaboration, leadership, decision making and ability to analyze diverse facts and develop clear and concise reports and recommendations. • Ability to work cooperatively with others. • Proficiency in software programs including all Microsoft Office programs. • Mature professional attitude and considerable discretion, including ability to manage confidential information. • Ability to perform with considerable independence and initiative.
