Lab and Research Technician 2 employees provide increasingly complex technical support for projects and may engage in increasingly complex scientific experiments. May handle more sophisticated administrative and logistical tasks. Lab and Research Technician 2 employees operate under supervision with a degree of independence when following set protocols and procedures.

The Larson laboratory in the Department of Biology is seeking a Laboratory Technician 2. This position collects wild birds from field sites, maintains bird and their facilities before, during and after experiments, and breeds animals for studies. Incumbent performs DNA extraction, isolation and preparation, PCR and sequencing, primer development, and other genetic analyses. Incumbent performs tissue sectioning, histological techniques, cytometry, and other cellular analyses. Incumbent secures and maintains supplies and equipment necessary for performing duties. Incumbent is responsible for data collection, entry, analysis, and presentation, including analysis and transcription of audio and video records of behavior. Incumbent cleans and maintains experimental equipment and cages and is responsible for day-to-day administration of the laboratory including training and coordination of student personnel associated with animal care and wet lab efforts and purchasing and receiving of laboratory supplies. Incumbent interacts with and assists other laboratories with similar techniques.

This full-time position will remain open until filled.

This is a restricted position contingent on continued funding.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Associate's degree required. Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related field by the start date is strongly preferred.

Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience. At least one year of work in a laboratory setting, including experience handling and caring for animals and experience managing and analyzing data is strongly preferred. Experience as a student will be considered. Bird husbandry and knowledge of the use of and breeding methods for birds, specimen management, data collection and management with Filemaker Pro, observation and analysis of animal behavior is strongly preferred.

Knowledge of DNA extraction, PCR and DNA preparation for sequencing, cryosectioning, immunohistochemistry, fluorescent microscopy, and/or animal behavioral analyses preferred. Ability to use Filemaker Pro; Adobe Suite; MATLAB, Python, or R is preferred. The employee will handle birds used in the laboratory's research on a regular basis and will go out into the field (generally lowland scrub) to collect wild birds.

Licensure: None.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
